Head and Cam time! Help me make a comprehensive list of parts!
Heads and Cam time! Help me make a comprehensive list of parts!
Hey guys, I'm doing heads/cam over the winter, oh yeah, nitrous also. Here's what I actually have in my room:
-Cam
-RR's
-Springs
-Pushrods
-Shims
-Timing chain
-Intake, timing cover, waterpump gaskets
-Opti
-AFPR
-Fuel pump (just in case)
-Nitrous with all the stuff to install it
-Head bolts
What do I need, and what brands? Here's what I think so far:
-Head Gaskets (Impala SS??), header gaskets-percys blow proof, opti seal (GM), any more?
-Probably get taller valve covers (buddies had problem with rockers hitting the valve covers)
-Not related, but for *trying* to save my rear a diff cover
-What fluids will I need?
-Probably do plugs and OTVC wires, any recommendations?
-Valves, any recommendations?
-I may get rid of EGR and AIR, is this worthwhile? Will my mileage go down if i remove these? (trying to save every last bit)
What else do I need? I want to do it once and do it right.
Thanks guys!
Brian

Ferrera valves for sure.
Comp R pushrods
timing chain gasket set from autozone. 12 bucks
MIght wanna go Comp R lifters too.
New LT1 timing chain set 129 bucks from Jason Cromer
Any rear girdle will do.
Impala SS gaskets if u want high compresson, let your head porter know your going with those gaskets.
Colder plugs gapped around .38 if your running a 75-100 shot.
Regular dino oil for engines initial start up and synthetic 500-1000 miles after.
OTVC wires + valve cover looms for them, makes things nice and easy.
Stage 8 locking header bolts
My friend said he noticed his car run better after removing the air pump and egr. I havent done it on mine... probably will though.
Make sure if your engine is sitting a long time cover up the engine so dirt doesnt enter in and use a torque wrench to get the proper torque on all bolts..
WIth heads and cam you'll need 30lbs injectors and i'd look into a 52mm tb. Also use RTV on your intake manifold so it does leak. When taking the water pump off cover up the opti as best u can with rags and plastic to keep it dry. Replace the 2 o rings on the water pump and the opti spark with new high temp o rings. Make damn sure they are high temp o-rings. The front gasket set from autozone might include them i dont remember. Make sure you put the harmonic balancer/pulley exactly the same way u took it off.
Thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

Couple of comments.
1. You might as well sell the AFPR, you need to do your tuning with the PCM.
2. Stick with Fel-Pro gaskets. You can't go wrong with them.
3. There are a number of good brands for valves out there. Assuming you aren't doing the head yourself, you would be well advised to go with a brand the person doing the heads has experience with and recommends.

Water Pump (optional)
Optispark (optional)
gasket set
Antifreeze
oil filter
Oil
Cam lube
Thread Locker
Thread Sealant
Permatex Ultra Copper

Jon-I'll still mod the GTP, gonna get rr's and LS1 TB upgrade and some minor handling stuff. So i should get lifters? Ditch the AFPR, I see the point, tune via the cpu and reflash as needed, since I have the OBD1. Any other opinions on EGR/AIR removal? As long as mileage isn't reduced or damage done to any part I think I will do them. TR6's it is, lol.

Hey Brian, got one valvecover on and it dramatically reduced the noise from valvetrain
Email me or pm me if ya got partiular questions. I would get an AFPR because your duty cycles will eventually go up with stock injectors. If you crank up the fuel pressure, you'll decrease the duty cycle and increase the life of the injectors. I am installing my vortech over the winter, so we should definitely hook up next spring! Heads + cam + power adder = fun + broken parts!
