Head Bolt and Valve Spring Retainer Interference

OK all,

I just resolved my first issue with the heads well and now I see that the #1 bolt interferes with the valve retainers on both sides of it.

I see two issues I need help on:

1. the rubbing against the retainer is giving me a false torque reading on this bolt

2. the retainer could be not seated properly and causing spring or seal problems.

Granted it is not much of an interference but you can see that it causes physical damage to the bolt head.

Thanks all for the help!

Remove the retainer and grind away the interference areas.

UPDATE:

What did was take off the bolt and grind away the shoulder. Now my only concern is lack of accurate torque numbers because the surface area is smaller on that bolt.

Does anyone think a 5 ft-lb difference (I theorize) will make much of a difference on new ARP bolts?

Should have done it this way.

The bolt is the critical component; the retainer will work fine with the small amount of material that needed to be removed.

And all this time I thought the retainers went on top of the springs.

Yeah, it's the locator, not the retainer.
