head bolt sealant?

ive heard all kinds of different stuff to use on these bolts... which is the best way to go.

Ive bought the arp head bolts with the loose washers and was gonna torque them to 85 foot pounds using permatex high temp thread sealant #80632 and 30 wt oil on the heads and washers... anybody see any problems with this??

ive got the sequence and everything imma go 3 passes 45 65 85 maybe? any advice??

85 lb/ft sounds kind of high. Pretty sure I torqued mine to 70 lb/ft.

65 is the stock torque. ARP may have a different spec, but 85 sounds high.

my ARPs were 75ft/lbs

there's a piece of paper inside the bolt box that tells you the specs

Permatex #2 non-hardening is the best thread sealant you can buy for this application.

Stick to 65-70 lbs with the head bolts - going higher could end up with threads pulling out of the block as that is where the stress is being applied unlike a stud where you are turning the nut on the top side.

Are these the #234 pro series bolts?

I disagree on this.....Permatex #2 is a gasket sealant not thread sealant. Look at permatex's suggested application....

.......oil pans and valve cover gaskets. I have read of many complaints about #2 leaking with head bolts.

I think this is the stuff he needs.....I've never had it leak on me.

Permatex does list head bolts as an application. 24 hours min for cure....72 for full cure.

Head bolts are not listed when looking at the data sheet....however temperature sending units are...so you may be okay, but I don't know. I would use what I listed in my previous post.

That's fine....personally I been using it for this application for over a decade, other machinist's I know personally have used it for longer than that after using specialty thread sealants and silicones - this is the best stuff.

That's what I use for thread sealant on the engine.

The stuff above is white. You only put it on a portion of the threads.

Did you buy Permatex #2 or Permatex High Temperature Thread sealant?

Just spread some around half the threads or so, if you're unsure - more is better than less and it will only look excessive to the next guy taking it apart.
