Has anyone had a Comp Cam dowel too long for a vented opti?

Oh yeah, and I also thought I hear a squeeking when it "broke" from the front of the engine, almost like a squeeking belt. I am pretty sure that was the bearing spinning crooked inside the opti.

Can someone measure their CC cam, and the depth of the opti slot?

I posted some measurements on the first page. Did you see those?

Your stock dowel was 0.650"? What year was that?
I have a 97 with a 0.435" pin. I thought vented opti had the longer pin. No?

Ahhh, sorry, I skimmed over the numbers too fast.

Very informative thread, I assumed that since the vented opti had the longest dowel that I wouldnt need to trim mine! Oh well, does autozone have good prices on opti or just go with jason?

I found this in the camshaft descriptions on gmpartsdirect.com
Technical Notes: The LT4 camshaft P/N 24502586 was designed to be used in a number of different engines. Therefore, the following change may need to be made to allow for correct assembly of the engine:For LT1 and L98 engines 1995 and before, the dowel pin in the end of the camshaft must be pushed in so extension from end of cam is .30+/-.01", the same as the production part. For 1996 LT1 and LT4 engines, the dowel pin is in the correct position, extending .620" from the end of the camshaft.

We found out by putting in the top 2 opti bolts, and the bottom "leg" of the opti stuck way away from flush. When the opti is installed correctly, all the bolt holes should be flush with there mounting positions. If it is not flush, the pin is prolly to long.
Dowel pin
I just went through this dowel pin problem on a Comp Cam 230/236 in my 93. I upgraded the cam and opti to a vented opti for a 95.
The opti did not sit flat on the timming cover, but I never started the car. With help from Rob (shoebox) we determined that the dowel was the problem, so I removed the opti and ground down the cam dowel by .025" with an air grinder and used paper towels to keep the metal shavings from getting into the engine. I used PLAY DOH to determine the depth the cam dowel was going into the opt. The play Doh on the dowel was the bigest key, when there was some play doh left on the dowel I checked the fit and it was flat.
