it would be rough, whats the LSA on it?
you would likely have a powerband of 4000-7200 or so. if you dont have the full package to run it that high Id say stick with the CC306

I'm running a custom grind cam 242/252 with a 112 LSA in a 355ci. Car drives great around town. I have an A4 with a PI 2800 and 4.10's.

at least its 112, I was assuming 110 or 111, have you dynoed it with that cam yet? what heads are you running and where are you shifting?

I'm a little rusty on my in depth engine tech but I think Dave is pretty much right on with his guess of 4000 to 7200 rpm...thats too big in my opinion unless you've got a built bottom end and heads, otherwise you'll break parts revving to 7000+ rpm...and it wont take you very long.

No, I haven't dynoed it yet. I'm running fully P&P heads and shift at 6800 RPMs. For kicks I shifted at 7000 a few times and it still feels like it will pull past that.

yeah it will. like I said probibly around 7200 peak., whcih means shifting at 7500 to utilize your powerband to the fullest. you best have a pretty good rotating assembly and valvetrain for that. and if you arent using the heart of your powerband you may have been better off going with a cam that peaks around 6500-6800.

Once its tunned it'll run fine, far as being driveable goes. Gas mileage may not be that great though, but then again if you wanted gas mileage you would left it at bolt ons.

My cam is 236/245/112. The car drives great and the brakes are just fine.

However, I do have 383 Stroker, heads, M6 & 4.11 gears.

I'm assuming that this is a ~350 ci motor, not a stroker?

Tough to judge rpm peak just seeing cam specs because the cylinder head plays a big part in "where" the engine will peak. Most of the dyno runs I've seen for cams in the 230 range peak in the 6300-6500 range. The better the heads breath upstairs, the higher it will rev.
I've seen mechanical cams in the 240 @.05 range peak at 6400-6700 rpm range in a 350. 95bird, who is running a ~250 @.050 110 lsa solid roller in a 355 is shifting just shy of 7k and running high tens...... so who's to say for sure where your peak will be?

I personally have run a myriad of 240-range cams in 350's over the years. Most didn't see a dyno but the one that did peaked at 6700 rpm (110 lsa) with a set of Brodix T1's, a rather "large" head by some standards. This car was very drivable as well (4-spd 66 Nova) and would have been even more so with fuel injection.

of course if your heads cant flow at that RPM your peak will be lower, im taking about where the cam was designed to peak.
But like I said, that was a guess, and mabye a bit high, even if it peaks at 6700 youll need to take it to 7k to straddle your powerband properly.

I believe the original question was....

Has anyone driven a car with a very large cam
I have.

What are your personal experiences with large cams in daily drivers Dave?

If we are going to turn this into a technical discussion then the first thing we'll have to throw out are the generalities. They just lead to confusion for those who don't know any better.

The only issue I have with my car is low vacuum at idle, but the brakes still work OK. I may invest in an electric vacuum pump.
