Harmonic Dampiner

I was wondering how exactly a harmonic dampiner works on the engine. All i know is that it cuts down on engine vibration.

The crank twists/untwists as the different cylinders go through their power stroke. The dampener acts to tame this torsional (twisting) vibration.
