harmonic balancer

Does the balancer on a 95 Camaro measure differently than a 97 Camaro? I have this low mount alternator bracket and the pulleys don't line up. The instructions say it needs a 92-95 corvette or camaro balancer. I assumed they just left off 96 and 97

I think I found the answer that obd 1 and II measure different. That would explain it, but feel free to confirm this for me . I did not plan $200 for a new balancer...maybe I can find another bracket

The hub on a 96-97 is shorter than previous years due to the addition of the crank reluctor for the crank sensor. If you have the short hub, you could just use a spacer (the thickness of a reluctor) to take up the difference.

I don't think the balancer is your problem. As far as I know there is no difference in belt alignment between the 92-95 and the 96/96 balancers.

The only thing that changed on those hub and pulleys were the different length of the hub but ive never heard of using a spacer on a hub to make up the difference that seems like it would be a weak point due to the hub and pulley not being right up next to one another.

The spacer doesn't go between the hub and the pulley. It goes between the end of the hub and the crank sprocket, replacing the reluctor gear. The $400 ATI Super Damper includes a spacer, so their hub can be used with either the 93-95 or 96/97 configurations.

Surprising that the shop suggested either/or on a Corvette vs. F-Body hub. I always thought the Corvette and the F-Body hubs have different lengths, since the Corvette belt spacing is different than the F-Body spacing.

I forgot to post yesterday, but I ordered a spacer and they also threw in a set of 5 different alternator spacers for the fan just incase I need to tweak things a bit. Hopefully this should do it.

Fred- Here is their description: "Will work with LT-1 engines using a 2 1/8" thick Corvette balancer and a G.M. CS130 alternator with the 6 & 10 o'clock mounting points, part # 7861. If using a Caprice, Impala or Buick engine it will require a crankshaft hub G.M. part # 12553250 used on 1992-1995 Corvette and Camaro - Firebird engines."

Adding the spacer should give me the corvette spacing so hopefully it will work, but I won't know for sure until I try it I guess.
