hard time removing crank hub

i am having a hard time removing the crank hub on my 95 z. i have 2 diffrent types of removal tools and they both seem like they are not working. the bolt is out of the center of the hub and the balancer is off. is there any pics or diagrams that can show how it comes off. I am in the middle of a heads and cam job. car is automatic

Re: hard time removing crank hub

You may be stipping the crank threads. Is the hub moving at all?
I removed my hub using a balancer/steering wheel removal tool. I removed the washer/spacer from the hub center bolt and threaded the bolt back into the hole about 4-5 threads. I used this bolt to "push" against. The hub came out came out really easily. Just make sure that you don't bottom out on the hub bolt. If the hub isn't moving something isn't right.

Re: hard time removing crank hub

It comes off with a puller. What you do is take a harmonic balancer puller, not a jaw puller. Screw the bolts in the holes,if you have to use smaller bolts and nuts so they fit threw the tool. Take a strong but skinny bolt or punch and put it in the crank bolt hole, but make sure the bolt is long enought to stick out past the hub. Then put the tool and and put it against the bolt or punch and crank away.

Re: hard time removing crank hub

I used a three jaw puller on mine and did as already mentioned with threading the bolt back in about half way. Don't try to start pulling on it with only a couple of threads screwed in. Once you get it busted loose it will come off pretty easy ( you'll have to use the puller the whole way off though) good luck .

Re: hard time removing crank hub

I used a 3 jaw puller and pulled against an extension for a small socket wrench which I put in instead of the crank bolt to avoid damaging the threads...it came out but very very slow..if you're going to change the gasket anyway you could heat it up as well then it will slip off easier.

i cant get it busted loose without the crank spinning.( heads are off the car )
maybe i need more leverage. i have tryed each way people have told me. is there anyway i can prevent the crank from spinning?

Put the balancer back on the put the puller on it with the bolt back in about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back in the center then use the puller against the head of the center bolt and it will back right off! You will have to take it off and move the bolt out and continue to do this until you get it off. I ruined two pullers trying to get mine off the first time and I didn't know about this site. The design on the hub is setup so that you have to use a bolt or some of the other suggestions mentioned already in the center to get the hub to move otherwise you are just working against yourself. Good Luck

From what I could find his site only has how to remove the pulley not the hub.

Re: hard time removing crank hub

The pulley comes off with 3 bolt's. The hub has a "built in washer" in the bore, hence the need to put the bolt back in a few threads to pull it.A 3 hole(chicken foot) puller will work with the weight removed.

Re: hard time removing crank hub

When you put it back, get everything clean and put the hub in the oven at 250* for about an hour or so. Take it with gloves and haul *** to the car and install, put the crank bolt in and tighten while it is hot.It should push on by hand, just make sure it is on all the way.

Re: hard time removing crank hub

Your lucky, I couldn't even get the balancer off easily or at all with it on the car. I'll just wait to do it when the engine is out of the car.Nothing has been real easy with this car but I sure as hell am a lot faster when I got to take something off to get to something else. It always seems something else has to come off to get to what you need.
