Question Hard Start, And Some Times No Start

I have just gotten my first z its a 94 LT1 with a 6 spd it has roughly 65,000 miles on it i purchased it from my brother the problyms we are having with it is it takes spells where you can crank and crank on it and it wont start and then other times it will start and run just perfect then it has also started here lately starting descent and running good till it warms up after a few miles then starts cutting out. I have scanned it with my snap on scanner and only code i have gotten was mass air flow which was put in backwards so i turned it around and it ran fine for awhile and also the 1-4 shift light code which i assume is because it has a skip shift eliminater in it. Oh yea i had it on the scanner while it was not starting and it had (0) cranking RPM'S and im wondering if that could be the opti that i have read so much about on here tonight but am not sure cause there are times that it runs just fine. The parts that i know have been replaced is plugs with bosch plattinums and msd wires accel super coil and accel performance ignition module new battery and alternater also he had put the hypertech power programmer on it but was recently taken off was also wondering if the hypercrap could have been some of the problym because once he took it off it started everytime for him and me aswell now so far anyhow. one last thing can anyone tell me what the lt1 is suppose to run for timing cause the scanner is showing me its running 19-20 degrees btdc.

A helpful hint..... You might want to retype that with some added punctuation and capitalization.... otherwise its just about impossible to read and respond to. Might explain why no one is responding.

You timing is fine for a stock LT1. If you had a problem with the optical signals from the Opti, it would be storing DTC 16 and 36. You indicate you have not seen these codes. Yes, pulling the connector off the skip shift solenoid will set DTC 84.

Cool I didnt know anyone made performance ign modules for the LT1s.

But I would also check your fuel pressure just to make sure the pump isnt going down hill. These kind of problems are hard to diagnose without having the car in front of you. I change the fuel filter regularly.

Mybe your ECMs coolant temp sensor is going bad , just a thought, don't want you to go off on an uneeded tangent.

I have seen intermitent opti signals failing without setting a code. Especialy in a 93-94. Since you have teh scanner hooked up look down the PID list and you should see a value for "lo res" or something very close to that. while cranking you should see movment of that value. Thats a value for the low res pulse from the opti. It could be intermitent due to a poor connection at the opti plug or along that harnnes.

Other things that I would be thinking about. get it to hwere it doesn;t want to start and figure a few things out like if your getting spark and or fuel. This link will have some detailed tests that you can run for both. If you can narrow the search down by emiminating a fuel and or ign system fault you can do much better at tracking down the gremlins.

there is the link http://mainstreamtopics.com/forums/i...p?showtopic=78

We could go off making guesses at the issue since you have given us some info to go on but it would be much better to just start eliminating some of the causes instead of guessing at the solutions

Re: Hard Start, And Some Times No Start

Thanks for the help know i was rambling on quite abit but was tiried. It does have a knew ECT in it already. Also it has a new fuell filter in it, the fuell pressure checks out fine now and when it has the problym with no starting. When it doesnt want to start it still has fire. Dont know if this information might help anyone cause it sure is getting agrivating to me

Can you tell more about the Accel Ignition Control Module?
I searched[including Accel site] and can't find one for a 94Z?..
Thanks!

Intermittents are the hardest to troubleshoot. If you had no cranking rpms, I would suspect the opti, even though it is not throwing a code. Check the harness on the opti end for any corrosion.
