Gutted cats on a lT1, and exhaust question??
Gutted cats on a lT1, and exhaust question??
How hard is it to gut the cats on the lT1's??
I just got a custom 4-inch exhaust installed, and it doesn't really sound the way I want it too, w/my current set-up, If I had LT's it would be different.
Well my friend has a 02 SS and he gutted his cats, cut off the muffler at the y-pipe and put on a bullet muffler at the end of his Y, it sounds badass, so I was going to to do this.
also that will pass inspection right??? As long as there is "cats" and a muffling device correct, I have OBDII and live in TX.

It will probably pass the visual inspection but if you gut the cat, I seriously doubt you will be able to pass an emissions test. I'm not sure what emissions laws you have in your area so I will leave that to you to sort out. As another possibility, you might want to consider an electronic cut out. You could place it before the cat and it would be loud as crap! I know, because when I installed my headers I ran around with not cat or exhast and it would rattle the ground. Scaring people was the best! Just something for you to think about.

If you're not worried about emissions, cut the cat off, gut it, then weld a straigh pipe in its place, then cut the cat in half, and wrap it around the straight pipe and just tack it in place. That will flow and sound much better than just a gutted cat. If you have OBDII, I think you will need O2 sims if you !cat.

I have heard that 3" is the best you can do for you car, and that 4" actually hurts the performance of a nearly stock car. Unless you are planning to do some major engine work soon, I don't see why you put 4" exhaust on. I'm not trying to be an ***, I'm just curious.
UUUUUHHHHHH, I'am running a cam and roller rockers!! and the exhaust I was running was choking the cam, It runs A lot Better w/ the 4 inch! and The reason I'm asking about the cats is B/c I want a little bit more airflow.
It does say that I have the LT4 hotcam in my sig ,and last time I checked that wasn't a bolt-on, not trying to be an ***.

If 4 inch is too big, why is everyone running 3 inchers with cutouts??????
3 inch is what the market gave us, but if i would have known about the mufflex 4 inch system when i bought my 3, i would have had it for sure.
We dont need no stinkin backpressure, what are these 1.8L hondas? common guys.

I live in Texas and have gutted cats on my car. It sounds nice, and might flow a little better, and for now will pass an inspection . The only way it will pass is at a not so picky shop. If and when a car such as mine is hooked to an emissions machine, it will Fail. Then no inspection sticker. Until then. Ride on.
I have a 97 Z and i gutted the cat that is connected to the collector and i cut the other cat off and put a straight pipe. It did make a difference high rpms. If you are going to gut them be ready to buy some O2 Sims or else you will be throwing a SES light. And for emissions is all about who you know.

3" and a cut-out is still 3" under the car. There are many people who say the 4" hurts performance, that's why many people do not use it. When you get into bigger cam, heads, or stroker motors then you will need the 4" under the car. If 3" is good enough, then why go bigger when you don't need it?
