guide plates vs. self aligning rr's

Ok.. dilema here.. After installing a cc 305 and hardend push rods, and guide plates, i started breaking rr stud bolts.. I originally thought it was the springs but after talking to the tech support for comp cam's he has me thinking its the guide plates and the rr's not getting along... so my question is this... how do i know if my rr's are self aligning or not?? they were on the car when i bought it so im not 100% sure.. they are crane gold 1.6's and they have little washer's on both sides of the wheel that the spring goes up against... i need to get this fixed today.. so tell me what you think guys... as for the springs, i dont know if they are stock or not. those were also on the car when i got it.

If they have those washers on the side, then they are self aligning. Those washers are what keep them on top of the valve head and if you use the guidplates with self-aligning rockers you will get problems. You have to use SA rockers by themselves or Non SA rockers with guideplates. Hope this helps.

Ok with that said... would those 2 things being used together cause rr studs to snap??? Also, the reason i put guide plates in was because i noticed on the bottom of the rr's looked like they were being rubbed against and wore down on the bottom side.. thanks for the help so far

Yes, it could cause problems, especially at high lifts. The rocker arm has some side to side movement as it goes through its motion. If you have guideplates, the motion takes place at the valve. The tip of the rocker slips somewhat across the top of the valve. If you have the self-aligning rockers, the side to side motion takes place at the pushrod.

Combine those two, and the sideways motion of the rocker has no place to go. It's effectively locked in place at the pushrod by the guideplate, and by the self-aligning rocker at the valve. Something has to give, and that's the stud. This is probably also causing severe wear on the valves, guides and seals, since there is obviously quite a side load on the valve.

Pick one or the other (self-aligning or guideplates). You may also want to check the length of the pushrods.

From your other post, it seemed the most obvious thing was coil bind. Have you even checked for that yet?
