Ground Strap is VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

I finally had a chance to datalog the new engine, I'm going to the dyno to check Ions tune, and when I started I got and error code MALF42:EST Ground. That turns out to be bad grounding in the ignition system. I looked at the coil and found that my brother who was supposed to be helping,LOL hooked the ground strap to one side of the coil and the ground wires form the harness to the stud on the other side of the coil.Moved the strap to the side with the wires from the harness and the code went away.... I knew grounding was important but, but this is my first experance. I hope this helps someone else when they search this code...

Re: Ground Strap is VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!

Technically, it should not have made a difference if all the surfaces were clean. Any point on the engine should have the same ground potential. The code 42 description is the circuit is shorted or grounded. It does not actually mean there is a grounding problem. It would seem you had a problem with the ground strap not making a good ground to the engine that was possibly making a difference of ground potential between the chassis and the engine. Electronics are touchy sometime and good grounding can obviously make a difference. Good thread that, as you say, may help someone with a flaky trouble in the future.
