Grinding noise at startup
Grinding noise at startup
Hey guys, I just had my clutch/flywheel replaced and I am getting a nasty grinding noise when I start up my LT1. I am afraid they did not attach the starter correctly. Could it be anything else??
Thanks!
Thanks!
Yes, the noise stops as soon as the key is moved from the start position to the run position. I just had my flywheel removed and replaced with a new one. I am starting to think its because the starter is not aligned with the flywheel correctly. Are there any other possibilities? I don't think teeth are missing from the flywheel (that is what haynes suggested). Would shims on the starter motor help?
Thanks!
Thanks!
The starter has to be clearanced so that you can only get a paper clip between the tooth of one gear and the valley between the teeth of the mating gear. If that clearance is too big or too tight, grinding or chirping is what you will hear. Wear of either or both gears is enivitable.
Unfortunately with starters that have a nose cone, you can't measure with a paper clip. It can only be done with starters that do not have a nose cone support.
like this one that I used.

You will also notice the clocking holes that starter has. The same can be done with those front mounting holes without having to use shims.
With the nose cone type, you have to keep adding shims and trying it until it quiets down.
Remember that shimming the bolt closest to the flywheel pushes the starter away from the flywheel and shimming the bolt farthest away from the flywheel pushes it toward the flywheel.
I fail to understand however, if you had the flywheel replaced, the folks that did it wouldn't go the extra step and do it right???????
