grinding from engine?

grinding from engine?
i keep feeling this weird grinding feeling through the pedals/floor board. it feels similar to grinding gears except that it seems to be coming from the engine bay, not the tranny. it seems to happen whenever im in gear at like 1k rpm, such as starting from a light. i think it may have some connection to the steering column, but thats just a hunch.
