grinding 2nd ...........what's the deal

Here's the situation. As of 2 days ago, my car started grinding when going into 2nd. It only happened every once in a while and only from the 1st to 2nd upshift. Yesterday, the grinding became more frequent and also started to grind during downshifts into 2nd. Today, it grinds either which way when going into 2nd. However, it doesn't do it if I shift at low rpms such as 2000 or below, but the higher the rpm, the worse the grinding is. The clutch pedal is definitely pushed all the way to the floor during this, and it only happens upshifting and downshifting into 2nd. I asked a buddy who had a similar prob with his car, and it was his throwout bearing. But thats a tremec in a mustang, not a t56 in a z. I don't know much about these things so any help would be appreciated. The car is a 95z m6(obviously) with 101,000 miles and is all original. Please help, I don't want to blow up my tranny.
Thanks

Jamie

Synchro and speed gear. The synchro equalizes the speed gear to engine speed to allow the hub to engage. The reason it isn't as bad at lower engine speeds is because the speed gear isn't going as fast and is easier to synchronize.

If you dont have the money right now to fix i just double clutch when you downshift to second. This makes synchros last alot longer

They are right, 2nd gear syncro. comes from slamming 2nd.

Don't forget you have some type of metal particles (usually bronze or brass) floating around in the gear case now.

yep, you're going to eventually need to rebuild it... it's not gonna go away hehe... i was reduced to skipping 2nd altogether (double clutching didn't do a thing for my 1st-2nd shift) it won't be too bad... if you have the capability of dropping the tranny yourself, and take it to a transmission guy, it couldn't be more than 2-300 bucks to open it and redo the syncros... he'll probably (if he's decent enough) let you SEE what's going on in there and show you the gear assemblies, etc. and let you decide if you want to just redo 1st and second gear (mine were ground out really bad hehe) or if you just want to drop the car off and let him do it all, i'd take a shot in the dark of 6-700 bucks... and you might as well do the rear main seal while that transmission is off, and if you have money, look into the flywheel and clutch assemblies

I believe 1st and second use the same syncro, dont they? Your not actually grinding the gear if it makes you feel any better, your just grinding the syncro. Like they mentioned, you can double clutch and try to "rev match" the gear.

You won't believe this but when I lived in Cali for 6 months I was having this happened when I moved back to chicago it actually went away and has never come back. It seriously felt exactly like a synhro too thats the weird part.

uuhhhmmm... depends... once a transmission guy cracks it open, he'll be able to tell you... the higher gears in these cars don't become worn basically at all, it's the first 2 or 3 that take abuse... so once he/you get a look at how it all looks inside, you can pass judgement... as far as the syncros, get all of them done, they're usually sold it sets for the tranny, so it'll come with all of the syncros for the whole transmission anyway... i just had 1st and 2nd rebuilt, new magnets placed in, and the fluid changed, 3rd gear through 6th were in pristine condition, so i didn't have to spend $ on them
