I have a brand new CC 503 cam and the dowel pin on it is much longer than the one on my stock cam. I have a 94, so i believe that the dowel does not turn my optispark like it does on the vented ones. Anyway, is it better if i grind the pin down from the end of the pin or if i cut it off from the side?

Yeah that's what i'd say. I got the same cam sittin in my room room right now. Where you at in canton??

 

2 cams me and a buddy have had to be cut and the other was ground on a bench grinder. Tried the hammer but the pin didnt give.

 

I just used a grinder worked great and I used to live in canton.

 

Get a trash bag and poke a tiny hole in it. Stick the cam in the bag and slide the dowel pin through the hole. Grind it down. Really helps with keeping metal shavings off the cam.

 

I mushroomed the tip of the dowl from hammering it down when i put a lt4 cam in my old l98 and had to sand it down. So i vote for grinding or cutting. Just clean the cam really well afterwards.

 

I still don't know what to do ! It seems like tapping it in is another option, but i don't want to mushroom the pin either. I suppose i could try tapping on it a bit to see if it will move easily, if not, grind it down while protecting the cam with say a garbage bag.

I live off Warren between Sheldon and Canton Center. How come the cam is sitting in your room? Are you just waiting to put it in?

 

What kind of hammer did you use tho? if you use a ball peen or some similar metal shaping hammer its going to reshape and mushroom the pin, however if you use a driving hammer such as a deadblow hammer or a brass hammer it wont reshape the pin and thus the pin wont get mushroomed.

 

Cut it down with a good quality cutting wheel on a high speed angle grinder. Grinding would work too, but out of the two, cutting will be faster and result in less metal shavings. Just remember what Norm always says, "Measure it twice and cut it once.".

 

I cut my pin and pluged the hole this way.

don't press the pin back into the cam, i bought a cc502 that had the pin pressed in and it was dayum near impossible to remove it. That's a ****ty way of doing things. cut it.

 

CAREFUL! if that pin cracks when you are trying to grind it you will have to dril l the cam. I welded an old vice grip to the tip of it and the SLIGHTLY heated the cam (don't over heat as it may warp the cam) then pulled it out. I also called Comp Cams and they said "Oops, sorry for the wrong pin, let us send you the correct one". So I got it and just tapped in the new pin.

As for tapping this longer one in...guess what...its in as far as it will go so don't even bother.

I think Comp should relize they are being a pain in the *** with this because most of us don't realize that the pin is too long until the FUGING CAM IS IN THE CAR WITH THE HEADS ON!
