and when it comes to the headers and catback do name brands mean anything?
pacesetter longtubes and ORY - get the coated ones, and then a catback of your choice. The best flowing ones that are good prices are magnaflow and hooker. The magnaflow is stainless though, so its pretty nice.
Also look into a nice torque converter, look at a yank ss3600.
Those two things should put you right around a fifteen hundred with a very noticable improvement.
Than you can add 3.73 gears for probably 500 installed, which should put you right at your 2,000 budget.
Or, you could drop the whole 2 grand,a nd buy a a 9" with 3.73s or 3.90s and never have to buy another rear end again.
What are your goals for the car? is it a daily driver?

I run Pacesetter coated longtubes, off-road ypipe and two on the left exaust, sounds nice, my buddy has the same headers and ypipe with a hooker catback, sounds really nice also. Next time I do headers on the car im gonna go stainless, but for a good budget header made in the USA which offers a great fit, I say pacesetters are the way to go. As mentioned earlier a stall would make a noticeable improvment as well. On a stock car a nice full exaust setup would be my first choice
You can save a good amount of money by dropping the cat back exhaust and running true duals. I spent around $700 for my whole exhaust set-up and that is installed. Pacesetter ceramic lt headers and the parts from the site below, except dynomax bullet mufflers instead of flowmasters. A normal cat back system is at least a $1,000 or more. And the power gains are much better than a cat back system. The down side is they are louder and not emissions legal. Here is a site to help you out.

Now with the rest of the money I would definently look into some 3.73 gears. Someone mentioned $500 installed and they are right on the money with that. So with the other $800 a mail order tune and a yank ss3600 stall like mentioned above should make a nice improvement..

Name brand cat back systems can be had for $500...Hooker Aerochamber. You can spend a great deal more but don't believe that you HAVE to spend $1000 on an exhaust system.
The way to generate power in an engine is to make it breathe. You started well with the CAI...headers, a y-pipe and a cat back are the next things to invest in. You'll want coated headers to keep underhood temps down.
You can do a lot to these engines..how much is really up to your wallet.
If you've done the free mods...TB coolant bypass, etc. Then you can go to the engine internals or work on other things like the rear and suspension. 3.73 gears really wake up the automatic equipped cars. Aftermarket rear lower control arms can help you put all the power you have to the ground, maximizing the bucks you put into it.
Some mods require supporting mods. The higher stall speed torque convertor mentioned above requires the use of an aftermarket transmission cooler.
So after you add things be sure to get a tune. You can get some good gains on a basically stock engine with a mail order tune. Oh, one last thought...if you're going to get a tune, add a 160F thermostat and have the tuner do his thing there as well. He'll add some timing advance and get you some power..
If you want an idea of what mods can get you how much power, take a look at www.ws6.com/ The guy has dyno'ed his mods before and after indicating what you can expect both on average and at peak. Sure it's one guy on one dyno and won't be exactly what you'll get but it'll give you something....

Yes you can get a cat back system for $500 or so but then add the y pipe and LT headers and to have it welded and mounted up a $1000 or over. A full 2.5" true dual system with LT headers welded and mounted $700 or less. And like I said better power gains and the sound that makes people jealous.

There ya go, long tubes and true duals for about 700 if you can install it all yourself
