Got Smoke?
Got Smoke?
Just finished installing my CC 1.6 roller rockers and while i was revving her up my buddy noticed puffs of black smoke coming from the tailpipes. Now im not sure if the two are related because i recently had my cats removed and since then she has been smelling rich (i think that's normal). So here's my question(s): Can 1.6 RRs cause black smoke? , Would removing the cats make it run rich?, or is my problem more serious? I don't have a scanner so i can't offer any more info. Thanks guys.
Oh yeah, there's a clear liquid (water, no smell) that comes from the pipes also.

Re: Got Smoke?
1.6's may make it run a little rich. As far as taking out the cat, it can make it smell a little richer. On the "96", it has rear o2's by the cats............. did you have it reprogrammed or put the o2's back in?
Re: Got Smoke?
1.6s aren't going to make the car smoke. Make sure they are adjusted right obviously so the car breathes right. If you removed your cats you probably will probably want some O2 sims in the back, i don't think they will heat up enough without the cats there.
Re: Got Smoke?
thanks for all the replies yall. I just want to make sure i don't have a serious problem before i move on to the next project.
One other thing though, the engine oil seem to have a slight fuel odor to it. Is this normal if the car is running rich? And how do i lean out the fuel mixture? Sorry for all the Qs and thanks in advance.

Re: Got Smoke?
if your oil smells like gas then that is really bad. when you installed the roller rockers, you replaced the springs, right? when you removed the springs, you didn't move the valves around too much did you? if so, you could've created too much clearance in the valve seals, which would let oil get into the combustion chamber.
what i would suggest, is let the car sit for a while, and have someone start the car while you're behind it. if there is a larger amount of black smoke on initial start up(after it's been sitting), then that's from the oil being able to seep down into the combustion chamber while the engine was off.
the gas could be getting into the oil through older piston rings, if it's really rich, or from the situation mentioned above.
but eitherway, if your oil smells like gas. find out why, fix it. you can mess up the bearings.
