Got a SES code 100 and now Why am I Overheating?!?!

Ok,,i got it scanned and the code 100 came up which is "insufficient signal activity" of the MAF..anyone ever had this code?..and what is the likely culprit of this?..im hoping it will just stop once i clean it out..but then the SES light magicly disapeared..the misfiring/rough running stoped, BUT then i had another problem ..my car just started to overheat too and run really hot. and i heard a loud rattling noise coming from the engine/front (cat?) for some miles but it went away , i guess when i got cooler..i had to make it home , hopefully everything is fine. one thing my friend did notice was that one of the bolts on the water pump looked wet and it could be leaking very slowly.. could the water pump be going out?..sound like the symptoms of anything?.has anyone else ever been through this??.any help would greatly be apreicated..

Could be a failing/intermittent problem with the +12V supply to the MAF sensor. Check the pink wire at the harness. For some reason, this is a fairly common problem in the 96/97's. People who have tried to find the break, or short of whatever it is, haven't been able to find it, and had to run a complete new wire.

Just a stab in the dark.
