Got a question about shifter noise.

I have a Hurst Shifter in my car and lately it seems that it has started to make noise. When I mean noise, it’s kinda like a ball bearing that badly needs oil. When I don't have my hand on the shifter the noise is very light almost unheard but as soon as I rest my hand on the shifter it start with the whining noise really loud. Now it may have made this noise all along but I have recently taken my subs out of the trunk for extra room so I'm hearing more noises from the car now. Anyone have any ideas on what to look for? I have already tightened all the bolts. I have not messed with the shift stopper things yet, I kinda like where their set at now.

Its a possibility that the sound you are hearing is your clutch throwout bearing. It may or may not be on its way out. I installed a new clutch and a new (Pro 5.0) shifter at the same time, and its pretty noisy. I hear transmission noise that I never used to as well. I wouldn't worry about the noise, its probably just something you couldn't hear because of your stock shifter, since that doesn't transmit as much noise.

oh i got a question along the same lines... (not to hijack) I just installed a pro 5.0 and I dont think I have the stoppers adjusted so that 6th gets all the way in.... well it does get all the way in, but its like the stopper is trying to push it out, and it makes a whining noise. Will that hurt anything, or do I have to take it apart and adjust the stopper. It mostly does it in 6th, and a little in second.

Ive been afraid to burn something up, I keep forgetting I need to adjust it, and end up driving it like that.

I just ditched my stock shifter and installed a Pro 5.0 with a Lou's Short Stick. It's definitely a lot louder, and I hear stuff I never heard before. Also gets louder whenever I put my hand on the shifter.

that's the noise im talking about!!! Never heard it before... Maybe its the stoppers resting on the shifter stick and when i put my hand on the shifter it adds more pressure for the noise to become louder... I'll adjust them tomorrow moring and see what happens.

I think most of my noise comes from the Short Stick.

EDIT: Replied before I saw the previous post. It makes sense to me that the stoppers (non-existent in the factory shifters) could be causing the extra noise. I know on my shifter, it's set up to be just close enough to get it into gear.

If I were you, I'd definitely adjust those stop bolts. What I did was pull back as hard as I could on the shifter and then tightened the bolt til it just grazed the shifter. Then I released the shifter, and loosened the bolt about a 1/2 turn and put the nut on with some locktight. Then double check it by pulling back on it.

RealDealZ28 - yeah I know what you mean about the noise. It scared me at first cruising around town. The more I do to my car, the more sounds I discover

Thats how I tried to do it, but apparently didnt succeed. It doesnt help either that 2nd, 4th, and 6th all stop at a different point (I cant hit the stopper in 4th as it is).

One solution would be to take the bottom bolt out completely and drive around like that. Then you can see if problem you are having is actually a normal occurance or if it is caused by the stop bolt.

BTW - this thread has been officially HIJACKED

Don't apologies. I'm pretty sure that it is all of our problems. I will adjust mine in the morning and find out for sure. But I'm 99% sure that it is the problem!!
