Emissions inspections in NY State depend on the county.
Most don't have it.
Never had my car checked since I bought it.
However my mechanic said it's coming here in Buffalo eventually.
That's why I put emissions fittings on my TPiS longtubes and cats in my custom ypipe.
On the random pipe the passsenger cat is in the stock location and the driver cat is next to it. So both cats are in the stock location for the passenger cat.
The further the cat is from the engine the longer it takes to warm up. That's the reason for not moving it from the stock location.
Now that our cars are 7 years old I believe there is some leeway regarding the location of the cats. I believe the car just has to have them.
OBD II cars just get the computer scanned to see if it's throwing codes in a lot of places.

Thoughts on SLP shorties

I have the same headers (coated as well) that i put on my 96 SS this past summer. Installation wasnt bad, but you do have to remove the steering linkage to fit the drivers side in. BUT, and this is a big BUT, the ceramic coating has started to rust. It may not be rust, but it damn sure looks like it. and these were put on less than 6 months ago. I talked to Chris at Jet-hot, they do all of the coating for SLP, and he told me he would recoat them for nothing, but it still sucks that they are like this after so short of a time. They are nice....but that sucks.

you got me??? maybe its just the coating corroding. Jet-hot said that if the car sits for extended period of times, that moisture can build on the coating and cause damange. They said that wheel polish might work on them?? havent tried this yet either.

ok i just re-read this again....u r saying since the passenger cat is in the same place as stock and the drivers is right next to it that it is in all sence legal b/c u never changed the location of the one

therefore with the driver side one next to the passenger side one they both work to the OEM standards b/c they are in the stock location and heat up the right way

hope i didnt confuse u it just came out that way

Well the random pipe isn't officially strictly legal but then the law is an ***.
The law is a blunt hammer written to discourage common people from tinkering with and/or removing catalytic convertors because they cut down emissions 90%.
On the random pipe both cats are in the place a single cat car has one so what's the difference.
The car will pass a sniffer test so it's up to the inspector if he/she even knows about the wierd 96-7 coffee can cat.
BS baffles brains and if you look around someone will pass the car as long as it has cats and isn't throwing emissions codes.

If you want just a stock type replacement exhaust with both cats in the factory locations go to
www.cheapexhaust.com
They have both sides for about 400.00
