Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
I bought some heads for my new combo and I busted them apart and frankly, they needed some attention. I paid a great price for them and I was going to have them looked at anyways.

I was hoping for a little better than what they made, but still, not too bad. My local guy wants to open up the roofs on the intake side...but I told him to just wrap it up for now.
Thought I would share.

Re: Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
i think it is absolutley rediculas to have to pay that kind of money for some afr heads and then have to port them anyways. Why can't afr just do it right the first time. I'm not saying it is rediculas to buy them. i'm just saying it is rediculas for them not to port them like they should.
Re: Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
Yes, the heads have been ported by a shop out in Texas.
My local guy is cleaning them up for me though...valve job..playing with valve angles...
Money wise...I bought them for $2400.

Re: Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
Yeah no joke. You can easily spend $1500-2000 on just porting and all the fixin's for a hi-po application. Even that is on the lower side for a custom port that's done by a very experienced shop from what I've seen.
Was the exhaust flowed with a pipe?

Re: Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
Get some bare AFR 210's for under $1000 and send them to Lloyd ... parts, assembly etc - he can do it for under another $1000 .... and they'll be some badass heads rest assured. Inexpensive.....
how would those AFR 210cc heads do on a 350 or 355? they have some monster combustion chambers .... lower compression yea, but im sure you can make some of that up with a thinner head gasket? just a thought, what do you guys think?

Re: Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
My brother spent 2,000 on his LT4 AFR heads should be here any day. We are hoping for 300CFM with a 2.05 intake valve and some porting. Funny thing is I believe he is just going to bolt them up to his car now (NO CAM) but he does have a strong valvetrain and some 1.7 RR's
He told me he wanted to build another motor later and do the cam( he has a high mile motor)

Birdie2000 - The exhaust was flowed with a pipe...but to be honest with you, the exhaust ports are pretty big, so a pipe probably does nothing for it...I mean big enough that my Hooker LT's flange was 3/10" to narrow, so I bought a set of Kooks headers which mate up almost perfectly.
Phillagenburn - As for getting a set of bare AFR 210 castings...you have to do some serious work to open them up when the come bare...then add the price of items for a wicked solid roller(valves, springs, retainers, locks, shims, etc). You will have some good $$ wrapped up in it. You should really price out what it costs to get heads such as these. Not a flame...but seriously.
S(Whitey) - car will not run as well as it should with those heads.
Most guys that get a set of heads like this are not trying to get more compression by running a thinner head gasket. You get a set of custom pistons with a small dome. The heads I have are 69 cc (as cast, 76 cc).

What you said is basicly verbatem of what one of the members of this board says. I think Realquick is the guy that did just that, but what always gets dropped from the story is how the heads were purchased on a closeout sale from HPE or something like that. Finding the heads for the price that member paid, is like finding a 4 leaf clover. You can get AFRs for good prices, you just have to watch.
Not everyone can do/get ported AFRs for under 2k. I think he just got a good deal and now people think that is the standard. AFR setups USUALLY aren't cheap.
Canton,
Nice numbers. What size motor did you end up going with? I read about your 427 saga (Ie...Too big for the block).

Re: Got my AFR heads flowed...not to bad.
396" 12:1 motor.
He left a message earlier telling me he was getting even better numbers than he had told me early today (the numbers I posted). Curious as to what he is getting now?
