Good oil and filter?

Good oil and filter?
Whats a good oil and filter to use with my car. It has 70,000 mostly highway miles. It has been using penzoil 5w-30. I want a well performing oil so should i stick with regular oil or switch to synthetic. My car is driven in the winter so it must be good for winter/summer. Has anybody tried that Mobil 1 clean 5000.

Re: Good oil and filter?
The best synthetic oil is Red Line (and Royal Purple). It's one of the few oils that is NOT based on dino oil, it's 100% synthetic (unlike Mobile-1). At ~ $7 or $8 a quart, it's worth it if you want the best for you motor IMHO. Plus, they recommend to change it every 7K miles (because of filter clog). A good filter is Mobile-1, or even the AC Delco.

Everyone likes to give out oil info based on NO REAL DATA, well above I posted a link where you can find REAL DATA.
As far as Red Line and Royal Purple being "best" bull, they can be good when used in the right application and they are not the only players in synthetics though they all like to claim they are. How many of you want dyno or track results for mods not just "I liked it"? Well the oil answers you get here mostly amount to "I liked it" the link above has a lot of data about wear metal content in used oil. A lot of different oils vehicles and conditions, go to the Used Oil analysis section and search "LT1" and you can read for hours about what works well in this engine and under what conditions the owners used them in. From daily drivers to road racers and everything in between.
As for the filter Fram is almost universally considered the worst filter made, at least it is by those that have actually looked into it.
Synthetic is pretty much a waste if you are relatively easy on the car and don't want to stretch out the change intervals. It will excel under truely hard use like racing or when you want to leave it in for 8K or beyond.

Re: Good oil and filter?
Yeah ATF can clean your engine out but it can also loosen up more crap if your car was poorly maintained since ATF acts as a detergent and could lead to premature bearing failure. I have used ATF in the oil in many beater cars and it fixes noisy lifters like a charm. With the fuel injected cars of today as long as you changed the oil in regular intervals you dont get the crap build up that carbed cars would get.

I use Royal Purple and Red Line oils in all of my cars... even my trucks. Have done numerous oil sample tests over the years too.
Easy to get "elitist" over little things like oil but the bottom line is... most of the name brand "synthetics" like Mobil 1, Red Line, RP, Amsoil, etc., are "good enough".

i use K&N HP-2002 oil filter. i'm thinking about also installing a Franz filter. The franz uses a roll of TP and it is not used as the primary filter. it filters alittle at a time and works pretty good. drive 5k change the filter add a quart of oil. after the 5k your oil will still be clean and looking like new! hit me off line if you want more info on one and i can get you in touch w/ the right people.
