Gone through multiple Opti's so need suggestions

all,

2 engines, 5K miles and about 5 opti's. WTF? I have the vent hoses connected correctly, I confirmed that. one way valve is opening correctly only towards the intake manifold. Filter is in.

I end up with either code 16 or 36 so it ends up being the optical encoder only that is the problem. What am I doing wrong?

Ben

What kind of optisparks are you using?

AC Delco direct replacements. However, I have tried the Autzone rotating assy. Yes, they are refurbished at AZ but still should give me good life beyond what I am getting.

Honestly, I am only looking for 5K miles life out of these things since I do race so I am not expecting the world of them.

check the harness going from the opti to the ECM. Check the pins for damage.

My harness was baked and melted under the corrugated black plastic wire loom protector.

The wires had no insulation in spots. Summit sells a new one for cheap.

Check the length on the cam dowel pin. If it's too long it will put too much pressure on the rotor when bolted down and fail.

If you've fried 5 opti's then there's definitely common ground somewhere, and that's where I would put my money.

Have new harness already. Thanks for that idea.

Thanks but did this also...for both cams in both engines. Further, you can tell on the wear pattern that the pin is not bottoming out.

Can I have your money now?

Last time I bought a new opti Dal told me GM won't warranty the opti unless you replace the vacuum harness with it. I bought the new vacuum harness for $15 and it cured my opti problems. I was getting about 5000 miles on one before and now I have gone 50,000 on this one with the new vacuum harness.

Also check plugs, wires, and coil for any resistance or arcing. Either could cause the eye to burn out. Eric L
