Going to replace oil pan gasket this week, any suggestions ?

It has gotten to the point that this oil pan gasket leak is getting worse and sick of wiping up the floor of my garage. Last night I did a search in here on replacing the gasket, Iam going to try the method of dropping pan far enough to remove gasket and install new one. Looks like my oil cooler lines need to be removed and engine mounts disconnected and jack up engine to do this. Also exhaust Y pipe and starter, any other secrets I should know before doing this ??? By the way it is a 6-speed car. Thank you for any input on this topic.

so, how did you make out changing the gasket? Any advice?

BTW, TREYZ28/ASSCLOWN, Why do you bother to post stuff when you don't have any idea of what you are talking about?

you don't need to pull the pan off but you almost have to lift the motor a few inches to slide the old gasket out and the new one in. unless you have really skinny arms i guess.

well when i tried to undo my motor mounts, it was aROYAL pain in the ***!

if i had it to do again, i'd slide it under the oil pan in some way shape or form (clothes hanger?)
I also have very skinny arms though

So far I have the engine jacked up, pan hanging loose with old gasket removed, thats as far as i have gotten. Some things have come up unexpectedly and havent been able to work on the car as much as expected, but one thing I will say, its been a bigger project than expected. Hope fel-pro makes good gaskets, dont want to do this again.

Where in TX are you? If you are close to Austin are, I will come finish it up for ya. I did mine about a month ago after my cam install. Took me a whopping 30 minutes after dropping Y pipe. You don't need to raise the engine. Just slide the new gasket between the frame and bottom of oil pan into place, almost in place but outside of the pan rails. Since the half moon shape part of the gasket is moveable, stretch 1 side of the gasket around edge of pan rail. Now, you should have one side (passanger or driver, doesn't matter) in right and other side still underneath pan rail. Now pull other side over pan rail and you're done. I would put a little RTV on the half circle parts of the gaskets between rearmain seal and pan and also on front between timing cover and pan. Bolt the pan on, hook up starter, connect Y pipe, and you're done. LMK if you need any help,

Kyle

Yup you are right Trey, the trans is in the way, so i will just install new gasket with pan loose, not off the car.

Because 9 times out of 10 when you post crap over here in LT1 Tech, it's just a waste of bandwidth. You have little if any real knowledge of automobiles and it is obvious everytime you post.

You have one car that you have ever worked on yourself, probably haven't even done most of the work yourself and you go around thinking you are so friggin' brilliant or helpful.

Bottom line is, you have almost ZERO REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE! I could write down all the automotive work you have ever done on a paper match, and that would be an in-depth study.

You are what people call a blow hard, you go around repeating what other people say without hardly any experience of your own to back it up. The sad part is, is that you are getting better at fooling people the more you are around here. You may have some fooled, but not me.

Now I realize you are just trying to be helpful, and that's good, because that's what this board is about. But, think twice before you go posting info or advice to people that you make up or pull out of your ***, because that's how BS information gets spread around here.

Also, I will not respond again to this thread. I don't care how mad you are. What I have said here is true, and there are MANY others on this board that agree with me.

thats right, my Z is the only car i've ever done real work on.
but guess what this section is?
I dont anything about LS1s or classic tech. guess why i'm not over there.
FYI, I did do the oil pump with another board member who did his with an M6 adn he was telling me about the trans in the way.
If you dont like my advice, dont listen to it.
I go by my expierences. If i took my muffler off and list 4 tenths every time and someone with my setup asks about it, i'm going to tell them.
Unless i'm wasting YOUR bandwith, shut up. hows that
if you have a real problem- PM me.
