Going to go with XE 224/230 cam, but..

I've decided to ditch my hotcam idea, and go with something that will have a bit more potential. I am going to want this cam on a 114 lsa to pass emissions, I've heard the differences between 114 and 112 are negligable.

I don't see any packages from combination motorsports for that cam now, so i guess I am going to have to piece together something of my own. I know I could probably call combination motorsports and get some advice, but I would rather talk to you guys first to make sure they don't start trying to give me stuff I don't need and jack up the price.

What is the minimum amount of parts(budget) I would need to get this cam to work reliably in my car? I have a 93 FYI. I would like to get 1.6 rockers also. Also, in conjunction with the minimum amount of parts, what are the ideal parts, and the nice to have parts as well? I'm speaking of engine only parts, as i have headers, converter, gears on order.

I am not sure on the price but take what you think it is going to cost and double it and you will be in the right range.. (i found that out real quick when i started into it..)

You should call Combination. They are great to deal with. They never pressured me to buy stuff I didn't need or want, they just wanted to know my setup and goals and they gave advice from there. I got a 224/230 cam from them (114 lsa) along with springs, retainers, locks, pushronds, and comp roller rockers.

I'd keep looking for cams. I have that cam on a 112LSA and have since asked around quite abit and haven't found anyone running any "real" numbers in a 350 ci engine. I like the CC xtreme energy grinds, but don't think that particular cam is all it is cracked up to be in a LT1. Just my opinion, but ask around if you haven't already. Good Luck.....

What do you mean by "REAL" numbers? like major HP numbers? Primarily, im just looking for something to hit around 360-380 rwhp, and have a nice torque curve on eventual ported heads. I don't need to have 450hp on all motor, etc. Also needs to pass emissions. As far as I can tell, the XE cam will accomplish those goals. Still open for suggestions at this point. thanks for the heads up.

Cool, good to know.

You didnt get lifters for your setup? I probably wont need pushrods, as the 93's have hardened ones already from what I understand.

So at minimum now, I need the cam obviously, springs, retainers, locks, and the some rockers. Did you get anything from anywhere else? Or is that all you used when you put your cam setup in?

What price did you get with all those parts? was it from one of their GP deals? package deals? or just what they recommended over the phone?

Not all 93's had hardened pushrods so I'd drop the ~$35 for ones from cmotorsports. I'd also recommend replacing your stock lifters with comp r's or even just a set of new OEM lifters. Also make sure you get comparable springs to support the lift of the 224/230. I'd advise the EX-612's from cmotorsports (again) since they're rated up to .600".

Oh yea, you may notice the slack in the stock timing chain once you get everything off. Most people go ahead and replace the stock chain with either the LT4 extreme duty (~$250) or the Cloyes double roller (which required changing over to an electric water pump)

Re: Going to go with XE 224/230 cam, but..

I have seen a couple of 350 or 355ci engines with said cam hit low 360's at the wheels, but can't recall anyone higher than that. I haven't dyno'd mine, but my track times suggest that I didn't accompish anything special either. Oddly enough, a friend of mine hit over 370 with a 224/236 with shorties and a 48mm tb and stock injectors. Go Figure.
If you know of someone that has hit anywhere near the 380 mark with this cam please let me know, I'd like look over his/her combo. I am using the crane spring kit. Can't recall the exact number, but something like 1050555 and I believe they are good to .600. I am using 1.65 rr on in. and ex. so my lifts are: .553 and .561. Good luck!

Stock bottom end, heads....went 375/363 at the ground, through a cat. No track numbers because the motor cracked a ring land on the second dyno pull. FLAT torque curve.

This cam is much more proven than the 227/233 or 233/239 so far.

and that is through an auto right? pretty impressive nonetheless.

edit: checked your site, a manual. still pretty good. would have been close to 380 or higher with a good running engine.
