Going with an electric water pump, Will a standard timing chain work?
Going with an electric water pump, Will a standard timing chain work?
My opti crapped out and I am replacing it, so I figured I would install an electric water pump and install my new cam and a new timing set while I am at it. The cam has the longer dowel pin95+ and right now I am stock 94 short dowel pin. Since I am going with the electric water pump can I use a standard sbc double roller timing set. Also I would like the updated opti and I already have the cam with the longer dowel pin so what should I do for the opti and if I go with the updated opti do I need a different timing cover or is there and updated opti that works with the short pin and need to shorten the dowel pin in the new cam ?
Re: Going with an electric water pump, Will a standard timing chain work?
You'll need to do the full opti conversion (which includes a new timing cover), to run a sbc double roller, since the sbc cam gear doesnt have the keyways cut to accept the spined drive shaft from the non-vented optis
Here's a helpful page on the conversion:

Also, with the double roller, you may need to clearence the inside face of the timing cover.
BTW, if you are still running the stock 94 cam, then the opti converstion wont work - vented opti shaft is to long/hole in came face is not big enough.

Righ tnow it is the stock cam but I am replacing it and the new cam has the 95+ longer dowel pin. That will work wont it

Yea, you need to convert to vented opti and you can run a SBC double roller. I have a double roller in mine and it is much stronger, not to mention cheaper.
