Going 383 with stock heads

Well a buddy of mine just bought an lt1 block in good cond. He is thinking of putting a 3.75 crank in. It will have stock heads for some (probably for the amount of time he owns it lol) time and the cam he has is a cc502.

I'm pretty sure you upgrade pistons with a 383 but is that necessary with stock heads and a mild cam? This isn't going to be a race setup and he has a 4l60e. He said if he has to upgrade the pistons he won't do it b/c of cost but on such a mild setup as his does he need to?

Can he at least get a mild port job done on the heads? I mean Lloyd Elliot is very reasonable!

Re: Going 383 with stock heads

after everything that he needs to do is done..maybe, it really depends how much money he has left lol. He is trying not to go overboard and save the porting for later.

You can't just swap cranks and expect the engine to perform. If money is that tight you're likely to end up with a very poor performing motor. Better to build up the 350 with heads and cam.

tell him to save the money on the stroker and port the heads - it'll make MUCH more power.

Cam and heads.
If you cannot afford cam and heads, then N20.

Re: Going 383 with stock heads

The ONLY way I think anyone here would say it is OK to do a stroker under stock heads is if it is as a repair for blown shortblock with intent to do ported heads later. Otherwise doing a stroker with stock heads will cost more and deliver LESS performance than doing the topend and leaving the shortblock stock. The only way displacement makes power is if the topend can support it and a stock topend wont support a 383.

Agreed... do the 383 if you intend to build the top end later. If not... hrm

Re: Going 383 with stock heads

you cant run stock pistons on a 383 you need diffrent ones made for it, if you put stock pistons on a 3.75 crank with 5.7 rods your piston will stick out of the bore. 383 pistons have the pin higher on them to get them back down in there, and with a 383 on stock heads your going to need a 16 cc dished piston to get you to 10.5:1 compression a flat top piston would make the compression to high.

Re: Going 383 with stock heads

if hes got his heart set on this tell him to get a cast crank, re-use the stock rods, and get hypereutectic pistons for a 3.75" stroke and 5.7" rods.

that will be pretty cheap. the stock heads will choke it in the upper rpms of course but who cares? he'll be making more torque.

This is what happens when you saddle a stroker with even low level mildly ported heads, use stock heads and it will be even worse. I do not think they are going to find any problems with this car other than the parts selection.

Re: Going 383 with stock heads

I've got stock heads on my 383, for now. I bought the car off of a friend who was in the middle of building the motor for it. He got the shortblock done and decided to buy a different car so he sold it to me for a pretty good deal. I couldn't afford to spend the extra $$ to do the top end though so he just put all the stock stuff back on it til I can do an LE2 H/C pkg later. It does have a cam, but everything from the heads up is stock. It's actually not that bad, it has gobs of torque which makes it a blast on the street. I'm going to get it dyno'd and take it to the track as soon as I get the few remaining bugs worked out of it just to see exactly what I've got here.
