Question Going to a 383

So stock bore is 4.000". To get it to a 4.030".......Can I do this with a hone? or do I need to send it to a machine shop? A micrometer and a hone? Its not that much a difference but I know it needs to be done so that the rings will seat correctly.

then how were you going to check anything or put the crank in?

Let someone else build it.....you don't know what your doing and going to make a very expensive mistake. Or either buy a complete one from somebody.

I've rebuilt motors before, used original spec stuff though, I just didn't know how much 30 thousandths of an inch was. I made an association with spark plugs and found out that its just a TEENY bit bigger then I thought.

Have it done right at a maching shop. You wouldn't possibly be able to get a .030 overbore right by hand using a honing brush

For one thing, your cylinders are probably egg shaped now and it would be a total mess to try to hone that to a cylindrical +.030. Trying to do it in the car makes it really hard to keep it clean too. In the old days, they used to overhaul engines like that and just cut the glaze off the cylinder walls, but who knows how long something like that lasted. And if you don't know what 30 thou is, you are a lot better off just having someone build you a shortblock, like the other guy says.

you need more than a bore too... you need a longer stroke crank. 3.75 inch and that will require some clearancing to the block
