go big or not?

go big or not?
My car is leaking alot of oil lately and it is the front and rear main leaking. So i figure while i have new gaskets but in i will put a cam in at the same time but i dont know if i want to go big or go small. My choices are hot cam, cc305, or cc306, 847. My car is my daily driver and i think i will have my heads slightly ported nothing to major. I want to run ATLEAST a 12.50 in the 1/4. My main mods are cai, mac mids, slp loudmouth, 3.73's, midwest 2800 stall. What would you do go big or go small? As of right now i am leaning slightly towards the cc306 b/c i rode in a 94 z with a 306 and it was crazy. The only thing is i know the cc306 loves high rpms and i have stock bottom end with 80,000 on it. Will 6500 rpms hurt the bottom end? THANKS!!

Re: go big or not?
I have a hybrid, and I went small. I have stock aluminum heads, pocket ported and gasket matched so I had my stock cam reground. Costs ~$100 plus shipping at Delta. I had them make it 224/232 .508"/.524 112 LSA advanced 3 degrees.
It seems to make nice power to about 6200 I shift at 6400. A friend has a 306 with ported heads and from our track times he makes ~10 RWHP more, but IMO I have alot more low and mid range torque.
I would ask how often is it run at track versus on street? As for times best to type in what you believe here: http://www.race-cars.net/calculators/et_calculator.html
The hp numbers rely HEAVILY on porting. Expect prolly 320 for hot cam 330 - 340 846 and prolly 350 for 306. 12.5 seems lofty goal unless you get some good porting done.
Good luck

I NEVER said there was anything wrong with his goal. I merely gave an honest opinion of what to expect and unless he gets some GOOD porting he will have trouble achieving 12.5
On paper it always looks easy, at track he will likely fall short unless he gets GOOD porting IMO.
Lets review a Camaro weighs with driver lets say 3600 pounds. If he chooses a 306 cam and develops 350 RWHP in his A4. From the formulas we see that will get him an ET of 12.68. That calculation ASSUMES perfect gearing, perfect shift points, yet that does NOT meet his 12.5 second quarter mile.
Is a Camaro lighter than I assumed? If not there is a definite problem on his achieving the time as I stated.

Re: go big or not?
Why not the LPE 211/219?.....Awesome small cam, great for a daily driver, emissions legal, made my 383 go high 11s at 115 for 10 years...etc, etc....Obviously, the cam would be more effective with good head porting....
