GM plug wires $250+tax??

I went to a Chevy dealership to buy some Delco wires and they wanted $250 for them. I asked why are they so much and they said it's an LT1 it's high performance. I told them I had a factory supercharged Grand Prix and the the wires are only $60.

So WTF, I found some MSD wires for $100. Where is the best deal on the intra-web?

gmpartsdirect shows the dealer list as $231. Their price is $120, plus a probably excessive shipping charge. Part # 12173592 for 96/97's.

Thanks Fred, shipping is a whopping $35!!!! It must be because they are so light and small, that planes have more turbulence problems and therefor have to put more weight in the plane.

Are MSD wires ok? Like I said, with my GTP it was Delco wires or nothing. For whatever reason, everything else seemed to develope a misfire sooner or later.

Those OTVC wires, how do they compare with MSD?

I run the MSD 8.5mm Superconductor wires. I think they are about the best available. They will be a tight fit in the stock wire looms though (original wires are 7mm Packard), including the plastic grooves in the piece on the front of the engine next to the power steering pump. I don't run my wires in the stock location, because I don't have a stock ignition.

Yikes. Those sure have gone up. Replaced mine about 4.5 years ago and they were nowhere near triple digits.

Best deal on Delco parts is usually ac-direct.com. They show this part at $110.

There are three different prices for three different sets.... 93, 94/95, 96/97. The older sets are a lot cheaper than the 96/97 sets.

Well, I got to changing the driver side and left the passenger side for later, not the car is idling rough, just keeps fluctuating between 5-700rpm. All the wires aren't touching anything, and they plugs were new and are in tight an all the wires are snapped on. However, top end is fine with no hesitation. It feels really good even with just doing half the wire set.

I also have an SES light that I will have scanned tonight.

Is it possible, that these wires are already crap? I can't take the wires back.. Or that because there are new wires on the driver side and old crappy wires on the pass. side, that it's causing a crappy idle?

There was always a little flutter at idle with the stock set, it feels like these wires really accentuated that flutter. I'm thinking of getting a set of cheapo wires and seeing if these MSDs are really bad. I would put the stockers back on, but they were destroyed removing them.

Any ideas?

see what the code is...sounds like a misfire.

Why only put half on? You should always do the hardest ones first......your really in for a treat now

I only did the driver side for a couple reasons, one I was sick and didn't feel like being under the car for 6 more hours, 2 I had to work later that day, and three I just wanted to see if there would be a difference. I'm glad it happened this way because it would've sucked ***** to install these ****ty wires and have to go in there all over again.

As for the SES, It was for multiple random misfires. I wish it could tell me which cylinder was misfiring like the GTPs pcm does.

So what I did was just replace 1 wire at a time. I basically found out that the MSD wires are getting hot quickly. With a fresh wire in place, the car would idle smooth w/o a hint of roughness. Then within 20-30 seconds the idle would roughen to where it's been at. So I will not waste my time putting wires on the other side. I will just get some new GM wires and be done with it. If I'm going to spend an arm and a leg on wires, I'd rather have tried and true wires than guessing what my finicky car will like.

It sounds like a wire is touching or a wire may be bad. I have bought 2 sets of MSD 8.5mm super conductors and it seems every box has some issue.

I would check to see if they are arching at night. I know my first set started to arc real bad on the #8 cylinder.
