GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
Hello I will be doing a camp swap in a few weeks, just wondering if anyone was running a similiar set up and what there thoughts were.
I have Headers, Exhaust, CAI, and I will be upgrading to a FLP stage 4 Tranny with Vigilante 2800 TC. The heads are stock and I was thinking of going with the GM 847. Anyone running this setup? How would this be for daily driving? How is the 847 with nitrous? Thanks

well youre going to need some gears. i think a 2800 stall is a little weak for the 847 but i guess its your call. also, your valvesprings are definitely going to need to be upgraded, and hardened pushrods should be in the mix as well. the RPMS that the 847 likes to spin to is worthy of replacing the stamped steel rockers with a roller rocker. tuning is going to be needed as well.
Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
i haev a 847 in my 383... and heres what you need....
-52mm or bigger TB
-CAI
-LT's
-2800 stall or higher
-2.5-3' exhuast
-adjustable dual roller timing set.. ( 4' + already ground into the cam, set yours at -4' and it will equal out!!!)
- electric WP, must use with dual roller!!!
- 1.5 RR need springs good till .600 , if you have 1.6 rr you need a set of K motion 800's nothing less!!!!, they are ready to go on stock heads!!!
- lifters are fine, comp r's are too noisey!!!
-3.42 gears or higher.. 3.73 is ideal
-hardended pushrods!!
in a 383 the cam will wind out around 5400 rpm.. in a 355 or 350 it will spin high like 6200+ so if you have old parts replace them (ie. valve seals, spark plugs, lifters if worn out)
cam rocks with stock heads!!! good luck
also you must have a dyno tune... no bench will nail the tune, doesnt matter who its from.. i used pcmforless, and got some miles on it... then had it tuned.!!!

Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
I'm running a GM 847 in my 383 as well, this is my complete set-up,
Of course the 383 shortblock approx 10.2:1 comp. (5.7 rod, hyper pistons, cast steel crank) AFR 190 heads cleaned up. Comp R lifters, trickflow chrome moly pushrods, ARP 3/8ths studs comp steel 1.6 roller rockers, K-motion K-800 springs set at 1.90 installed height, ported intake (matched to gasket),AS&M 58mm t/b (very nice peice),Hooker LT , mufflex Y, Hooker cat-back,3000 stall vigilante , 3.73 gears, factory ram air with a K&N filter ,descreened MAF.
The car is a torque monster but revs and makes power as high as you want , in a 350 I'd imagine the torque would not be down this low. I set the car up to shift at 6700 rpm, its still climbing past that. At 1500 ele I run back to back to back 11.70s @ 116-117 mph.
The daily drive is pretty fine, I had to do some fine tuning to eliminate a sub 2000 rpm surge (around 35-40 mph) . The idle is nice an choppy, and it takes some work to get the exhaust not to choke ya at idle.
Over all I'm pretty happy with this 200 $ off the shelf cam.

Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
If you use 1.5 rockers the lift is maxed out in the 570 range on the exhaust. (558 on the intake)
Ive seen a couple on stock headed cars and they lope real nice and rev like a son of a gun.

Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
I think there are better cams out there for a stock head 350. The 847 is really big and if you look at the guys saying it a good cam all have a 383.. not a 350. If I could do it again Id go custom cam from Brett Baur because he can make you whatever you want in terms of where you want the power and approximately how much(within reason)... the cost to go custom isnt more than $100 over what youd pay for an off the shelf grind too.
Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
I was thinking of going with this cam to get max power out of the set-up, i keep seeing everyone putting down 350-360rwhp with stock heads and this cam. Thanks for the info guys, any other thoughts???
Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
I would go with a bigger stall with it, I'm running a 3500 with mine. I would get a dyno tune too, the car will run much smoother for daily driving.
Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
Everybody told me to go CC305 on stock heads, but I could stretch a CC306. And I have an M6. It's odd to see so many people not really question such a large cam.
Re: GM 847 in a daily driver (Stock Heads/A4)...thoughts??
Don't waste your time on a bigger tb unless you have a blower or turbo, not worth the 1-3hp you'll gain. I wouldn't plan on making 350-360 through an automatic, those cars are m6 cars with good tunes. I would also upgrade to a higher stall something around 3500, though a 2800 will still work. The specs on my cam are 236-245(little bit bigger than the 847) .576 lift and i have no problems driving that all the time, i don't know why people are so afraid of big cams. I never had my car dynoed tuned either, went with pcm for less and turned out great. Car would pull away at 1200rpm in 6th gear with no bucking, but would pull real slow lol. Also i would go with the 1.6rr, though the heads may be stalled after .500 lift the increase in the rate the valve opens will give you better power everywhere in the powerband.
