getting rid of water pump driveshaft

I am putting in a CSI pump, and I JUST bought brand new GM Seals for the crank, opti, and the waterpump. I have two questions:

First, do I even NEED to install the water pump seal, because I'm removing the water pump shaft?

Second, I installed the "plug" in the back of the pump housing, but with the water pump shaft removed, will too much oil be able to get into the timing chain area and cause any problems?

I may be worrying about nothing, but I want all my ducks in a row first...

You mean the hole in the block?

I blocked mine off with a freeze plug. I bet 90% of people leave it be. Don think it matters too much either way.

I did read a book by vizard however, where he suggested pluggin those front oil returns a little so that the lifters saw more oil on them and the cam. I think that applied more to flat tappets than hydro rollers.

where did you get your freeze plug? All I got was the freeze plug for the water pump housing which came with my CSI pump.I knew it wouldn't be a goog idea to leave the hole open in the block.

seriously man, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I called a napa warehouse store, and they man seemed fairly knowledgeable, and he said he has only heard of a fuel pump freeze plug. oh well, time to look in the phone book for a machine shop...
by the way, should I have used green loctite when I pushed the CSI freeze plug in the waterpump housing, because it's pretty damn snug as is???? thanks.

Napa carries the freeze plus, thats were i got mine. Its not in the computer though, they will have to look it up in the books. I went to a hub store and it was still special order. Pretty sure it was 1 1/4 inch. Make sure you buy brass so it doesnt get nasty on you and corrode out.

How about sealing off the timing cover? Does the kit include a plug for that? I'm going to pick up a CSI over summer.

no the CSI water pump only came with the freeze plug for the housing to stop coolant from coming out of the weephole. Man, I guess I really am going to have to work to get this thing blocked off..

keep the opinions/suggestions coming!

Well most people leave the water pump gear in place, and don't block it off.. until they the engine apart [timing cover and intake off] then it's best to remove the drive gear, and plug it.. so you can use a regular timing chaion also..
If you leave the drive gear in there, just replace the seal, and let it 'idle' there..
Also, I dont think the Mezeire comes with TWO freeze plugs? Mine had only one? [for the pump housing]

I knocked the seal out of the timing cover and plugged it with a freeze plug. I just took the cover up to Autozone and looked thru what they had till I found one that would work. I had to flare it alittle because it was slightly undersized....then I just put some RTV on it and knocked it in.

I just left the hole in the block open.
