getting my 383. what's needed?
I have been doing a lot of searching for a engine for my 94 camaro z28. The engine is getting old, using liquid bandaids right now for bad headgaskets.
Found a place in town that will send my engine in, convert it to a completely rebuilt lt1 383 400 hp stroker, free shipping both ways, with a 5 year warrenty for 2500. Engineauthority.com package b with new valve covers and all the goodies.
Already spoke to them and got that pricing. But now I am going to need to know what I need to replace externally. Will the stock distribuor work, starter, etc.

I know I will need a tune, maybe stick the lt4 knock module in the computer.
Re: getting my 383. what's needed?
$2500 wont cover good parts much less machining and assembly, or leave any money for them to actually have a reputable warranty program.
A "servicable" stroker rotating assembly is going to be more than $1500 without balancing, even a cheap cast cam is another $250(stock is billet) start thinking about oil pump, gaskets, head rebuild parts, timing set, oil pump drive, water pump drive. What do you think 2 way freight is???
Everything in that motor that is not stock is going to be a step BACKWARDS from stock.
Rather than laughing why don't you stop and think about it for half a second?
You ask the guys with decent strokers and you will find they tell you they have $3000+ in shortblocks alone with just good parts nothing fancy or exotic and without freight to a rebuilder, that is without head rebuilding(or porting) or valvetrain.

Thats what the builders quoted, 400HP. they have a 400hp 383 carb engine for about the same price, and thats not witjh me giving them a block at all.
trust me, i will get 100% of the spec. and post here when we speek again. I just want to price now, what else is needed besides a tune and headers.
Re: getting my 383. what's needed?
Engineauthority.net is an engine broker...they sell other peoples stuff. They aren't converting your engine for you...they're sending you an engine that has been rebuilt.
As Dwayne mentioned, this engine is likely total crap. 400hp out of a 383 is a pretty poor performer and is probably the reason they can offer a warranty at all. They mention using a SCAT or EAGLE steel crank with the stock rods....nobody seems to do that.
Overall it seems like a better choice to not send your engine to them at all but throw in a cam, buy a set of AI heads and be up on 400 horsepower with the stock rotating assembly. It'll cost you more than 2500 but you'll know what you have and it'll be better than the option you listed above....

Re: getting my 383. what's needed?
Dwayne and Hunter are right. There's no way you can get a reliable performance motor for that price with those parts. Doing so would be a colossal mistake.
However, if you DO purchase it I look forward to the "Budget 383 Carnage" thread.

Re: getting my 383. what's needed?
This isn't about bragging rights or performance.
For that price the only way to have something reliable is to have as much stock stuff as possible.
The stock stuff is much better than the cheap aftermarket stuff

Re: getting my 383. what's needed?
YES!Don't be a moron, listen to the heavy hitters here and do not blow cash on junk.
If you get a reputable shop to do a stock rebuild with a decent camshaft you won't need a warranty and it'll make 400hp easily.

Re: getting my 383. what's needed?
ussj4brolli, I know you are pretty much set on doing it this way, but I must urge you not to. My 383 had something like 1500~ just in machine work and assembly. That is not including parts.
It sounds to me like they are going to reuse all the stock parts, and put in new pistons and a cheap crank, cheap valve springs, cheap, just everything cheap.
We will assume 400hp is at the flywheel, so about 350-365 at the wheels, you can get a cam only LT1 to do that.
Have you stopped and talked to any builders locally to get estimates? Maybe ask them their opinion?
Like I said, you can do what you want but I think you may want to take a double take.
