Gen 1 SBC in a 96 Z
Hey guys, Im sure this has been gone over... but aside from the carb clearence and distributor clearence issues what else must be done to fit one of these bad boys in their.... Im thinking a regular 383 sbc would be cheaper and possibly simpler to do than a 383 lt1...
Any input?

Im interested in this post also.Would the bw t-56 bolt up to a gen 1 small block?I would guess you would need to get some type of adapter for the tranny to bolt up.If the gen 1 small block doesnt bolt up in the same location I know you would need a different driveshaft?

trans boltpattern is the same, if the gen 1 is a one piece rear main seal, you can use the LT1 flywheel, if it is 2 piece, lakewood or someone sells a flywheel to fit the 2 piece rms to a T56

Since you are ase certified in all eight areas I know that you know what your talking about, but the 1 peice rear main seal didnt come out untill 1985 did it?That the year they changed the crank flange.

yeah, you wont have to worry anything about the trans. just that if its a 86 and newer eng., your flexplate will bolt right up. but if you get an older eng. (85 and older) you will need a diff. flexplate. no biggie. make sure its a small diam. flexplate though so your LT1 starter will work with it. the diff. in cost isnt enough by itself to warrant all the extra PITA work you will be causing by running the gen 1. if its a race car, then fine. but for you, you want a dailydriver street car. unless you know someone that is selling a complete engine, you'll spend ALOT more money gathering the extras like intake, carb, distributer, waterpump, dampner, pulley set, alt. bracket, etc.. and, you will have to loose the windshield wipers I believe to cut up the cowl plastics to clear the carb.
