Gears: Series 2 or 3 Carrier

My 93 Z28 6spd has the 2.73 gears with the Series 2 carrier. I talked to the local gear shop about swapping to a 3.42. The guy said I need to switch out the posi to a Series 3. I know that Strange makes a 3.42 for the Series 2. I asked him about this and he said that it uses some kind of spacer and I would not want to go that route. He didn't really say why, and I didn't ask at the time.

Does this have something to do with the strength of the rear end? Is there a disadvantage to staying with the Series 2 carrier?

Thanks.

I have a 93 Camaro and went from a 2.73 to 3.73 and had no problems running Strange gears in my car. In my opinion there is no added strength in going to a series 3 carrier.

I went with an Eaton 3-serious carrier and 4.10's. I have a tendacy to have a heavy foot, No problems over a year. I went with Richmonds and rear stud cover. The richmonds were a little noisy at first but seemed to quite down a bit over time. Unless I am slowly losing my hearing and dont know it.

3 series gears for a 2 series carrier do not use a spacer. The ring gear is made thicker to compensate.
