are gears necessary w/ heads/cam?

when putting heads/cam in a lt1 car, 6-speed with factory 3:42 gears,,it is a necessity to step up to 3:73's or 4:10's ?
if i'm trapping about 115 mph or so in the 1/4, i'll be in 5th gear with anything higher than 3:42 gears right?
i was just wondering,, i'd like to get 4:10's but i don't want my car to run out of steam after like 90 mph..

My friend has a older dodge dart. He is running 3:08 gears and running 12.4 in the quarter.

You will just need to step up the rev limiter. Most likely a H & C package that traps around 115MPH will make power to 6600rpm so just revv it higher with 4:10's.

You use the gears for the set up you have..
For instance I have a heads/cam LT1 with SS 17x9 rims.
On the back i run Nitto 275/40/17 drag radials.
And it spins them over in the higher rpms.
I have 3.42's... if i were to switch to 4.10's i wouldnt get any faster because my tires would just spin..

16x8 rim with 245/50/16's drag radial will stick better than a lower profile tire like mine. Do your H/C then decide if you can benefit from gearing...

I don't know what a stock fbody would gain in the 1/4 with 4:10s but ive seen some post of guys saying they got around .4 and 5mph faster in the 1/4. Pretty nice gain for gears!
