Gears and Converter
Gears and Converter
I have a 93 auto firebird with all of the bolt ons and 4:10s and running 13.0's. I am buying a 3400 stall converter, and I am not sure what to do about the rear. I have a rear from a 98 with low miles(mine has 160,000) on it with 2:73s that I was gonna put it, and maybe install 3;23's that I have laying around.
Heres my question, should I
1.Leave the 4:10s and 3400 stall (it is my daily driver)
2.Put the ls1 rear with 2:73s
3.Put the ls1 rear and change the carrier and install 3:23's
I am not sure what to do, any input will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt

If you stay with the 4.10s and a 3400 stall and its your daily driver get your wallet out cause its gonna guzzle the gas.
If it were me I would go 3400 stall with the 4.10s and buy a beater.

2.73s and a big stall sound like the worst possible idea ever.
probobly feel like CRAP when you are driving.
3400rpm with a 2.73 rear is about 30-35mph. you are trying to get the tires to go from 0- 35 mph and hook instantly. Lots of luck. Lots of "snapping" from a stop if i had to guess depending on tires.
3400 rpms and a 4.10 is 0-20mph. MUCH better.

Listen to Trey. A numerically higher rear gear ratio actually makes a converter behave better, while also helping it perform better. I don't know the affects on gas mileage though. If you decide to to reduce the rear, I wouldn't go below a 3.73 with that high of a stall.
I think you should leave the rear in for now, and just put in the converter and see how you like it.

I should probobly point out that the same is true for a 6speed car with a big cam.
gears are a must-
why?
you need to launch at 4000rpms to get into your powerband, BUT your tires arne't just goign to go from 0-40 without putting ENORMOUS stress on the everything that spins!
going 0-20. not so bad.
or you can launch at 2500 rpms, hook and struggle into your powerband while bogging the motor because you dont make power down there anyway.
Thats why I got a 93 T-56 with 3.36 first gear ratio and 4.10s
cruise 75mph @ 2500- and 100mph at 3300 rpms
off the line? 3500rpms = 19mph
gives me some time to shift too! 38/61/94/127 mph shift points at 6800rpm red line. 3rd gear should be great for autocrossing too, 2nd will be nice for right courses.
