Are the gears and carrier compatible between 3rd and 4th gens?

Are the gears and carrier compatible between 3rd and 4th gens?

I know the rear end in a 4th gen is wider than a third gen, but are the gears and carrier from a 3rd and 4th gen compatible? 3:42's are what I am concerned about, if that makes a difference.
