which gears are best for me
i want to put rear gears in the car. i was told that 3.73 gears would be the best for me. so far i have a full exhaust system and cai. the car has stock 2.73 gears and the diff is now leaking.(id figure its time for gears ) my performance mechanic said that he will do it for $500 including parts and labor. is this a good price and what is involved in doing this? (change carrier ?)

You can buy 3 series gears for a 2 series carrier. How many miles does your current one have on it? If a lot probably better to get a new carrier. SLP had take offs for $99, but since no more F bodys are being made, maybe they're out. Check with them before buying a new one. An Eaton costs $400 something.

Whatever you choose other than stock will require a reprogramming update to your PCM... FYI.
Autmatic - 3.73
Manual - 4.10
Eatons have replaceable internal clutches (my choice)
Auburns are disposable
Count on $150 for the gears (plus 4.10 kit), $400 for the posi, and labor $150-$250.
Remember, whatever you choose, TAKE IT EASY FOR AT LEAST 100 MILES (300 PREFERRED). This will allow your gears to wear smooth... do not romp on it or gas it hard on the freeway for a little while or you will have a permanent "howl" in your gears!!!

I've learned that Auburns are rebuildable, but by Auburn. You send the worn one in to them, and they rebuild it for a fee.

That's news to me.... maybe it is a recent policy because people were getting turned off by it. Not rebuildable 2 years ago... I'm glad they provide that option now (unconfirmed).

I don't drag but Road Race, the 4.10s give me the snap to launch out of the corners... works perfectly with a manual. It is important to "Throttle Steer" for precise entry and exit. I had the 3.42s and they weren't enough...
For an auto, go with 3.73s. But I wouldn't change my 4.10s with my manual. Again, depends on your intended purpose... for drag... maybe a 3.73.
