gears on a 93

On a 93 speed density forum someone said that the gearboxes are different for 93 then 94 up and that you can put 3.73 gears in and have it be the same as 4.10 in the 94-up for the first three gears and not have to worry about shifting into 5. Is this true can someone give me some more information on this.

Yes that is true. The two M6 transmissions in question are an M28 and M29. The M28 came with a 3.36 first gear while the M29 came with a 2.97 first gear. The 93's also have a lower torque rating because of this.

I would highly recommend going with a 3.73. A typical install will cost you anywhere from 150.00-300.00.

The M29 has a higher hp/tq rating due to the fact that it was destined for a Viper, not an F-Body.

Well, after searching for the past 1/2 hour, I can't find where I read it. I do remember this though:

The 1993 M29 coded transmission is rated at 400 LB/FT due to the fact that these were actually meant to be in a Dodge Viper. When GM started production on the 1993 F-Body, Borg Warner didn't have the F-Body spec (hence, M28) T-56 ready yet. So, GM goes to Chrysler/Dodge, and purchases XXXX amount of Viper T-56 transmissions.

I read that too. My dad does a lot of work for Borg Warner and asked around for me and said that is what happened.

Yes I have red that, and I have one of those special M29 options. I have 3.73's in the car, and I am in about 5000 rpms or maybe +- some in 4th gear in the traps. You will only hit 5th if you are hitting the Juice with 3.73's and have the m29 package.
You are good at least until 120mph in 4th gear red lining at 5600 which is more then enough for most peoples traps with motorwork.

I now wish i had my stock gears in it the car, for high way purposes, but around town i love the gears and at the track. But It's all good on the gearing.

He is not stating that the M28 trannys are not good, jsut not as good as the M29 setup, with the closer ratios.
