Which gear should I buy? Please help!

I have a 97 6 speed with 3.42 gear. Mine is showing signs of going bad. I need to buy a new gear. I want something that will launch better from a stop. But yet be ok on the highway. I was told 3.73 would be better than a 3.42. Is this true? And somebody told me 4.10 would be too much and I would not enjoy driving it. How about some suggestions. Thanks!

Thumbs up

I recommend Motive 4.10 gears for your car. Thats what I have in mine and I Love it. Ive had mine installed in my car almost two years now with no problems.

do you have a M6? I hear first gear is a real pain. How does the 4.10 run on the highway? Thanks.

If you go from a 3.42 to 3.73s you won't notice much of a diff. really. I suggest going with 4.10 gears. They won't be that bad on the highway since there is 6th gear. I think you would be much happier with the 4.10s over the 3.73s.

with the 4.10 is first gear a pain? I mean you have to be quick with it. Does it get on your nerves having to shift fast into 2nd? Or can you cruise with a 4.10. I am just worried that I won't like it. I want a good launch but I don't want it to get on my nerves.

Yes, I have a M6. On the highway Im still able to get close to 22-25 mpg. Or at least thats what I figured when I made the trip from Afton, Mi to El Paso, Tx this past Feb. Driving around town the car eats the gas, but I dont really care, cuz right now gas is only $1.63 a gallon and not $2.00 a gallon like in Michigan. And yes first gear does go fast, only if your racing. But I actually use second gear at times to take off. Comparing the two gears, 2nd gear with 4.10's feels like 1st gear with your 3.42's. I felt a great difference in the performance of the car taking off the line after I changed the gears. From what I hear from other people here on the board, changing 3.42's to 3.73's you dont feel that much of difference.
