gear removal question

i have my timing cover off and i already have an electric water-pump...

what i wanted to know is can i remove the gear that runs off the camshaft gear to operate the mechanical pump?

i would like to remove it and install a plug into the timing cover...

is it possible and if so can you give me some info?

thanks

yes its possible. If you already have an EWP then just remove the WP drive. You can try a freeze plug in there but I opted to take the cover to a local welder and he closed the hole for me. I dont have to worry about a leak now....

Not sure what size plug you would need, hopefully someone will chime in who knows.

They told me the same thing. I was unable to find one that fit though...there was one that was real close but I was unable to pound it in. I went with the next size down and jb welded it. I don't know how well its going to work until I get the car running

now do you have to close the hole up in the block behind the timing gear?

I did the same thing. It's held up for the last like 6k miles with no signs of leaking or anything.
