Gear install question

i have a '95 with 2.72 or 2.73's or whatever. Anyway, my buddy took his 3.72 out of his '02 SS and put in 4.10's. i got his 3.72's and have heard that i need a spacer to put them in because i have a 3.42 or lower carrier. I also have seen gears for sale in Summit and they have an * buy them indicating that there are diiferent gears for different size carriers. Does anyone have any idea what the hell this is. by the way I'm not putting them in myself, but would like to know before i take them to the shop and start pulling crap out and then they won't fit properly.

Re: Gear install question

Ok heres the deal. Cars that came with 2.73 gears came with the series 2 carrier. Cars that came with 3.23's or 3.42's (6speed only) had the series 3 carrier. In order for those gears to fit into your rear end u will need a ring gear spacer. Basically it just makes the ring gear stick out farther to contact the pinion gear. I have heard the spacers are not a good idea bc the longer bolts have a tendency to work themselves loose. Whether or not this is fact, I dont know, maybe someone else can shine some light on that theory.

Re: Gear install question

I happened to have this discussion with DTS (DriveTrain Specialists) last month.

You can either get a 3-series carrier for your new gears...or use a spacer on the 2-series carrier.

They told me that using the spacer will result in a somewhat weaker setup. Is the difference great enough to be a concern? ...dunno, we didn't get into that...

Call Rich Perkins at DTS (800-521-0628), and he'll give you the lowdown.

FYI...they setup the 4.11 gears in my D44 for $150. I shopped around quite a bit, and this was the best deal I found.
