You have a series II carrier. 3.08 and over you will need a series III carrier. You will notice a difference with the 3.42's, but I would definitely go with 3.73's in an A4.

all kits are basically the same, they run about 97 dollars, 115 or so for the full deluxe kit, not sure what more that includes. RIchmond and slp make em. Carriers I think cost like 100 dollars too.

If you are running a series 2 carrier there is no need to go out and buy a series 3 carrier. I would just get a 3.73 designed for a series 2 carrier. ALso I would recommend going with a Strange Gear. If you do not want a whiny rearend then stay away from Richmond.

I would not do 3.73s either the gain from a 3.42 to 3.73 might .1. Gas gets hurt more than the payout of the gain is worth, and no traction. Like the other guy said just buy gears made for a 2 series.

The 3.42s probably won't save you any money if you have to buy a 3-series carrier. They go for a hundred, at least.

It really depends on how much you want to do to your car. Going from 2.73s to 3.42s will feel like night and day. The majority of f-body guys seem to think that 3.73s are perfect for A4s and 4.10s are perfect for M6s. That's probaby good stuff. If you're not putting out a lot of hp or running drag radials, the bang for the buck is probably going to be 2-series 3.73s. You can probably get them in for $450-$600.

On the other hand, if you're wanting to get to the 12s, and don't want to plunk down $2500+ for a 12 bolt, you should think about going with an Eaton posi ($430), 3.73s ($200), install kit ($50) and install (~$300). Probably close to a grand for everything. The Eaton is rebuildable and if setup tight, should be very reliable upto around 500 hp.
