If you are running a series 2 carrier there is no need to go out and buy a series 3 carrier. I would just get a 3.73 designed for a series 2 carrier. ALso I would recommend going with a Strange Gear. If you do not want a whiny rearend then stay away from Richmond.
The 3.42s probably won't save you any money if you have to buy a 3-series carrier. They go for a hundred, at least.
It really depends on how much you want to do to your car. Going from 2.73s to 3.42s will feel like night and day. The majority of f-body guys seem to think that 3.73s are perfect for A4s and 4.10s are perfect for M6s. That's probaby good stuff. If you're not putting out a lot of hp or running drag radials, the bang for the buck is probably going to be 2-series 3.73s. You can probably get them in for $450-$600.
On the other hand, if you're wanting to get to the 12s, and don't want to plunk down $2500+ for a 12 bolt, you should think about going with an Eaton posi ($430), 3.73s ($200), install kit ($50) and install (~$300). Probably close to a grand for everything. The Eaton is rebuildable and if setup tight, should be very reliable upto around 500 hp.
