Gear change?

Hey guys, im doing a 383 rebuild with Lloyd Elliot Heads, 230/236 114 LSA cam, complete forged bottom, bunch of bolt ons, etc etc. I know the days of my 10 bolt 3.42 are limited. So would a different size gear help me? Such as 3.73 or a 4.10? Also with the new gears would i lose any driveability? This is gonna see the road around 300 miles a month ish.

It would help to know if you have an m6 or an a4.

Six speed: not at all. My car is stock with 4.10s and I get great mileage... driveability is just fine.

Auto: I hear 3.73s are a good balance between mileage and performance

Depends a lot on how high you are gunna rev it. If you gunna be making a lot of power, but not reving real high you arent gunna want 4.10s b/c your gunna be hitting 5th gear in the quarter.

I might be taking your question wrong, but it seems like you are asking if a different gear will help the 10 bolt live longer. I've always heard of people breaking 4.10s, so I'd say that wouldn't be a good idea. I think a T/A cover might help keep it together, but beyond that, its kind of a lost cause. Its wierd tho, some guys have their car break on a stock motor, others can get 1.6s out of it on a six speed. Good luck with it. Let us know what kind of power you make too!

Im not looking to drag this car all the time, i just want speed to be there when i need it. I want gears that will best suit my needs. Gas mileage isnt really an issue, i just want acceleration and top end. Ill look for that cover and see if it will help me. I should be pusing around 450 hp with this motor, maybe more, im not sure yet. Will see. Keep the info coming though! Thanks guys.

Still need to know what you plan on reving it to. If you are making 450 hp and are only going to rev it to 6k you are gunna wanna keep the 3.42's other wise you shifting wont be able to keep up with the car.

With that much power you might be best off with the stock 3.42's, maybe 3.73's unless redline is gunna be around 7,000 rpm.

If you are going to be dragging the car all the time, you wont want to be throwing money into the 10 bolt. You can get a strange 12 bolt with 3.90's, and have the best of both worlds.

My bad, thought you said, WILL be dragging all the time. I have 4.10's in my 6- speed and love it. However I am scared to launch on them at the track, and I will be upgrading to a 12 bolt soon even though I only run about 3 times a year, good luck!

What about daily driving? Do you get more power with teh 4.10's? Whats the major difference between the 3.42's and the 4.10's?

Car revs a lot quicker, get into the powerband faster, and it also lessens the lower end "cam surge" problem. I love them around town, and I will definitely be going with them in a 12 bolt. The car definitely feels more "torquey".

Ok great. Last question is about reliability. How long have you guys had your 4.10's? Are they more likely to break for any reason? Let me know
