Re: gauge qestions

The coolant temp, oil pressure, voltage and fuel level gauges have nothing to with the computer. They are wired directly off sensors. Fuel level and voltage are unchanged in an engine swap. Every engine has a coolant temp sensor and oil pressure sensor. Just a matter of connecting them.

The speedometer will be a problem. It's driven off the PCM on 94-97 LT1's. But you can just keep your V6 PCM to drive the speedo. Then there's the tach. You can pick up a signal off the coil (since you appear to be getting rid of the PCM, what are you using for an ignition? Stock LT1 system requires the PCM). Interfacing that signal with the stock tach will be the most challenging issue.

well the thing is im going to a carburetor and this is my first engine swap so i figured with a carb there would be no sensors and as far as the tach goes i am useing an hei distributor the tach will run of the amps from that the speedo i figured i could just plug into the tranny but i dnt know alot about this stuff so i might not even be thinking right lol but im not useing any of the stock stuff bc i have a v6 camaro i have to change the gauges anyways

Re: gauge qestions

The tach is usually run off the coil. If you are running an HEI distributor, you have to have a coil. Has nothing to do with whether you are using a carb. The 93 LT1 used a tach thaat was driven off the coil, and used a filter in the line from the coil to the tach. Get a 93 dash cluster.

And as noted, virtually EVERY engine has a coolant temp sensor and an oil pressure sensor. How do you think they ran the dash gauges in production cars before the invention of EFI? Yes, some cars used a tube connected to a mechanical oil pressure gauge, and some used a temp sensor with a capillary tube that runs to a mechanical coolant temp guage, but you'd have to be as old as I am to have seen those. A Gen 1 SBC will have locations for both an electronic oil pressure sensor and an electronic coolant temp sensor.

yea the distributor has a coil in the cap and i wasnt questioning your intelligence i just posted that quote i new they had a temp and oil sensor i was just mainly concerned with the tach and speedo and fuel and voltage but thanks for ur help i appreciate it now i know where to start atleast
