Gasoline Smell
Gasoline Smell
Okay I have a 95' Formula V8. I am rebuilding the tranmission here in a couple days, slapping on some new tires, doing a WS6 front end conversion and... thats it.
Point of thread, I can smell gasoline when the engine is running. I was not too concerned because I had a 91' Oldmobile and it ran forever and it always smelled like gasoline.
But since this Formula will be my pride/joy/ricer killer/best car I've ever owned and I already love the hell outa it even though its stuck in my driveway I would like to have it running flawlessly.
So what are possibly causes, and what should I check for?
Also since I have 120K miles, I changed the battery, alternator, air filter, oil filter, oil, topped off the fluids, what else should be done?

PS. Fbodies rule.

A common problem is the vapor purge canister and it's supporting vacuum lines. Behind the driver side tire, under the fender liner is the charcoal canister. It recieves vacuum from the engine and in turn draws vapors from the fuel tank. Vacuum is routed from the engine along side the fuel and return lines under the car to the canister. If the vacuum lines are cracked, the fumes are not being sucked into the canister and you may be smelling them coming from the vent line. The vent line is clipped to a bracket infront of the differential near the fuel pump harness.
Check the soft lines at the engine and at the rear as well as the canister itself. I believe one way you can test the vapor system is to remove and plug the vent line(golf tees work well). Remove the front vacuum connection shown here Thanks Rob

Put a vacuum source like the mityvac brake bleeder on it and see if it holds vacuum.
Also test the solenoid with 12 volts to see if it is functioning properly.
