gas in the oil?
gas in the oil?
i went out to check the oil in my z and i happen to smell gas comeing off the dip stick. are the injectors leaking gas into the oill or is there something else messed up? please help if you can
thanks
thanks
Re: gas in the oil?
Hook up a fuel pressure gage and see if it holds when you turn pump off. If not, leaky injectors.
I had an ECM go bad on an 89 Formula 350. It would occasionally not start and smell really strong like raw fuel. Pulling a plug out of each bank would show raw gas on them. Only thing both banks had in common was the ECM. I've heard it can also happen on 4th gens, but it would be obvious something major was going on when it happens.

Re: gas in the oil?
What is the condition of your motor? Is is a daily driver? How many miles on it? There is only 1 way for fuel to get into the oil and that is through the rings (barring someone pouring it through the oil fill). This will indicate bad rings, an out of round bore, or leaking injectors. Try a leak down test to verify the first two. You can verify the last one by pulling the fuel rail with the injectors still installed and then looking for the leak. Try also pressurizing the system and recheck. Hope this helps.
Re: gas in the oil?
the car has 131000 miles on it. its not a daily driver yet. i have my v6 for that at this point. the guy i bought it from bought it from a dude and he put all this in it.
Moroso Cold Air Intake, aftermarket mass airflow sensor. It has a 58mm BBK throttle body, Ported and Polished Heads, and a Crower Stroker kit,Tall Cam Shafts, Hardened Crower Pistons, Connection Rods and Push Rods. Edelbrock Headers,3-in Cat-back Exhaust coming out of a Spin-Tech muffler.
the guy i bought it from put seafoam through the engine to clean it out and he thought at first that it might have made a injector stick but he also thinks that the car could be running rich. could it be that its running rich? im not a mechanic so forgive me for being dumb about some of this stuff.

Re: gas in the oil?
find a stock Maf sensor and see if it is causing it. My granatelli wasn't calibrated correctly and didn't know it until I got it dyno tuned. It was the biggest waist of money I ever spent
Re: gas in the oil?
In addtion to leaking injectors, as mentioned in posts above:
-broken diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator. Check the vacuum line from the FPR for wet fuel.
-Engine running excessively rich, due to a "false lean" condition. If you have misfires, or an exhaust leak before the O2 sensors, the PCM sees the extra air, assumes its running lean and richens up the fuel, adding fuel the engine doesn't need.

Re: gas in the oil?
my oil smelled like gas but my fuel pressure also pinned on the gauge.it was running crazy rich bc i installed a aeromotive fpr out of the box and had to tweek it a bit.i just got my new motor in so were still working out the little bugs like that.
Re: gas in the oil?
i havent been even starting the car since i noticed the gas in the oil. i have my v6 for daily driveing at this point. i hope one of your guys are right about it. so even if the gas sits there with out starting the engine it will tear up the bearing?
Re: gas in the oil?
To me this sounds like you might need to replace your PCV. There is always going to be some blow-by into the crankcase. The PCV lets to gas vapors vent from the crank case, to the intake an reburns them. If the PCV valve is plugged or bad, it will cause the problem you are saying. But on a side note, frequent, short trips could cause the gas to build up too because it never gets hot enough to form into a vapor.
An one last thing, the PCV is only like $5 bucks (so try it just for sh*ts and giggles and see how that works!)
