Re: gas milage only 10mpg i want to cry

My wifes 1994 Z-28 m6 is bone stock and gets 29-30mpg if cruised at 60-65mph steady highway in sixth gear. Mileage drops to 18-20 around town if you are driving with a light foot. My car has a cam and headers and I have no clue what mileage it will get ....I can't keep my foot out of it long enough to check mpg capability. I am pretty sure it would not do as well as her car.

With that many miles, a tune up should be your VERY first step. Get....spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, air filter, fuel filter, and PVC vavle. All these items are fairly cheap, and should be replaced anyway. After the tune up, see if you can get a hold of a scanner or have a shop scan your car. With the scanner you can see the readings coming from all these sensors so see if they are defective. The computer is there to help you not part hunt. Don't buy and replace something you don't need to.

Tune it up, then scan it

When my O2 sensors crapped out after my header install, my gas milage went from 22 mpg (mixed city/highway) to 12-14 mpg (mixed city/highway). As soon as the new sensors were in, the mpg went right back to 22 mpg.

Most will agree: You do NOT want to use anything but GM O2 sensors.
Do NOT buy the cheap Bosch or any other brand from Autozone.

GM Parts Direct, Dal, or Jason can get you a single GM O2 for less than $40 shipped.

Check the tire pressure!! (30-35 Psi) is good
Run a bottle of fuel system/injector cleaner
Cat clogged?

Engine temperature below 180 will most likely cause a drop in mileage.

if you bought it from another peson, perhaps they have removed the SES light because it was on and annoying them? or even burned out (for any number of reasons) still might be a good idea to have codes checked

Re: gas milage only 10mpg i want to cry

i am running no CAT. convertor.
i did forget to inform you guys that the car is equipped with loudmouth exhaust and flowmaster.

why would a engine temparture below 180 cause gas milage to go up?

i always thought.... the cooler the better
the dual fans are hooked directly up with my ignition. they stay on all the time. so my temp guage never moves. it just stays at 100. which is the lowest it can go on the guage.

I dont know how these guys are getting such great gas mileage. My '94 Z28 has 125,000 and with that kinda mileage im lucky to get 17mpg. Change the o2 sensors and youll prob be up to 15 mpg which is what most people i know with an fbody get once their car is over 100,000 miles. crying over gas mileage on an fbody is normal.

Mine dropped that low once. Changed plugs and wires and mpg jumped from around 10 to 16-17. 2 of my wires were arcing

Easy way to check. Turn the key on. If the SES light comes on, then it's intact and working, if it doesn't, then it's not.

at 140,000 miles I get 20 mpg all around and 28 to 30 on highway. I have monthly round trips of 250 and 300 miles so it's easy to measure.

clean air filter every other oil change

have always changed oil every 3 to 5K using Mobil 1 trisynthetic 5w 30 or German Castrol 0w30.

annually flush and fill coolant, drain and fill tranmission and differential fluids with royal purple or redline with LSD additive and change fuel filter.

run 93 octane from Mobil Amoco or Sunoco.

travel on highway at 65 mph, running 1750 rpms for 28-30 mpg to 80 at 2000 rpms in 6th for 22-24 mpg using cruise.

Only time I ran gas guage to E was on 400 mi + trip to see how the mileage would work out. Was spot on 30 mpg.

It's all in the throttle - easy for good mileage, hard for poor mileage.
